Overview
The Lead Medical Assistant (MA) provides patient care, clerical and environmental control services in the physician outpatient practice according to established policies and procedures. The Lead MA is responsible for utilizing information to continuously improve patient care and practice to enhance outcomes while collaborating with the physician/management team on patient care and serving as a resource to other Medical Assistants. The Lead MA participates in continuing education activities that enhance employee's professional abilities and ensure up-to-date patient care.
Job Description
Provides patient care, clerical and environmental control services in the physician outpatient practice according to established policies and procedures
- Performs general patient care responsibilities including checking schedules and organizing patient flow; recording patient blood pressure, height, weight; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, collecting specimens, phlebotomy, assisting physicians/nurses; preparing patient for examination and treatment; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms and requisitions as needed.
- Organizes medical records, including lab results, progress notes, etc. to ensure provider has all of the necessary information available during the patient's encounter.
- Instructs patient in basic testing requirements.
- Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include: setting up instruments and equipment according to protocol; cleaning exam /procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam / procedures rooms.
- Adheres to and employs appropriate sterile techniques and universal precautions guidelines.
- Proficient in specialty specific testing (i.e. Glucose Monitor Meters, Allergy Skin Testing, GI Breath Testing, Process Urine Samples) or other unique skill
- Trains new hires and transfers into specific clinic and/or department, ensuring proficiency in department specific needs
- Able to successfully support multiple roles and responsibilities within the clinics.
- Serves as a resource and mentor to the clinical team.
- Participates in clinical initiatives.
- Serves as a resource to patients for scheduling diagnostic testing, obtaining results, etc.
- Collaborates with management team by providing feedback for training and acts as a preceptor for Medical Assistants, students, and new hires.
- Collaborates with management team for daily/weekly clinic flow assignments.
Utilizes information to continuously improve patient care and practice to enhance outcomes.
- Assists with the identification of actual and potential risks to patient safety.
- Reports patient safety issues to the practice manager in a timely manner.
- Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinic services.
- Participates and assists with quality improvement activities for various clinics.
Communicates/collaborates with physicians and staff to provide coordinated, safe and compassionate care for patients
- Reports consistently patient data in a concise and thorough manner.
- Seeks to improve the effectiveness of communication and interactions with others.
- Communicates problems relating to patients and / or staff with practice manager quickly.
- Respects and promotes patient rights.
- Demonstrates compassion and caring in dealing with others.
Participates in continuing education activities that enhance employee's professional abilities and ensure up-to-date patient care
- Demonstrates participation in continuing education activities that enhance and expand employee's professional knowledge and abilities.
- Maintains own Employee Continuing Education Record and completes all annual competency reviews.
- Participates in organization wide committee and/or counsel or implementation and sustainability of project
Minimum Qualifications Required
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants (or other nursing program); Certified Medical Assistant
- Current CPR certification
- At least two (3) years of experience in a medical group practice or similar situation
- Minimum of (1) year employment as a Medical Assistant with Pediatric Specialists of Virginia in the assigned specialty service(s).
- Routinely works forty (40) hours per week
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word and Outlook)
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with both internal and external departmental contacts
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience with medical terminology
- All employees must pass an employment TB, drug and physical exam
Desired Qualifications
- At least five (5) year of experience in a pediatric medical office
- Holds additional active certifications or is proficient in healthcare administration support to enhance their current role as a medical assistant.
- Proficient in English and Spanish, verbal and written communication skills
