CNC Lathe Programmer and Machinist
General Description
The CNC Lathe Programmer and Machinist is primarily responsible for programming in the latest version of MasterCam, setting up, and operating CNC lathes, hones, grinders, and other shop equipment to produce prototypes and production components. The role includes writing programs, creating fixtures, and recommending tooling for optimal performance, while also supporting and training junior machinists and operators. The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate a proactive approach to continuous improvement, ensuring cycle time efficiency of his work while coaching others, and leadership. After 90 days of demonstrated performance, the candidate would be re-evaluated for transition into Lead CNC Lathe Machinist
Key Responsibilities
- Programming and Setup
- Develop and edit programs using MasterCam to produce high-quality components.
- Set up CNC lathes, grinders, and other equipment for efficient operation.
- Design fixtures and recommend tooling for optimal performance.
- Production and Quality
- Operate CNC machines to produce prototypes and production parts.
- Creates (preliminary?) inspection requirements for Junior Machinists/Operators. Collaborate with QC as needed.
- Monitor machinery and troubleshoot issues as needed, ensuring minimal downtime.
- Maintain adherence to quality standards, keeping scrap/rework rates below 2%.
- Leadership and Training
- Be able to train and mentor junior machinists and operators, ensuring accurate setups and production.
- Collaborate with the Production Manager to optimize job routing and timing.
- Act as a role model by maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Continuous Improvement
- Identify areas for improvement in processes and production flow.
- Actively participate in lean manufacturing initiatives and shop organization.
- Stay current on industry advancements in tools, machinery, and software.
Skills and Experience
To prepare for growth into the Lead CNC Lathe Machinist role, the candidate should demonstrate:
- Proficiency in programming CNC Lathes. MasterCam experience preferred
- Expertise in CNC lathe operation, including setup, tooling, and fixture design.
- Strong problem-solving skills to diagnose and address machining issues.
- Leadership potential, including the ability to train, mentor, and support junior team members.
- An understanding of production efficiency metrics, such as spindle utilization and job order times
- Experience collaborating with production managers and other departments to optimize workflows.
- A proactive approach to implementing continuous improvement projects
Physical and Other Requirements
- Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
- Capability to lift, push, and pull products weighing up to 50 pounds
- Dexterity to use hand tools and operate machinery effectively.
- Proficiency in using computers for programming and documentation.
Measures of Performance
- Demonstrates consistent improvement in cycle time/set up time efficiency and time management.
- Maintains quality standards with scrap/rework rates below 2%
- Achieves or exceeds time estimates for job travelers.
- Effectively trains operators to meet accuracy and timeliness expectations.
- Proactively suggests and implements process improvements.
