Position Title: Lead Instrumentation and Electrical Designer
Reports to: Instrumentation and Electrical Department Manager
Position Status: Permanent – Full Time
FLSA Status: Non- Exempt
Location: Pasadena, TX
Work Schedule: Standard schedule is Monday through Friday.
Purpose: Manages project with respect to overall design package setup, execution, presentation, and meeting client expectations.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Development of execution strategy including requests and technical queries
- Assignment and supervision of tasks relating to execution of project
- Development and accuracy of drawings and drawing packages
- Ensure adherence to design budget
- Submittal of project deliverables in accordance with project schedule
- Prepare cost-competitive manhour estimates
- Inter-Discipline coordination and communication
- Initiate change management when required
- Provide planning and direction for other designers in project specific tasks.
- Ensure design compliance with respective client/company specifications and codes.
- Oversee development of all Instrumentation & Electrical design deliverables under minimal supervision
- Perform field related work collecting design information and verifying designs for tie-ins and functionality to existing facility.
- Provide guidance and direction to junior level personnel
- Perform field support activities for engineering support during construction.
- Checking and back checking drawings produced by drafting personnel as well as peer designers
- Interact with designers and engineers from other disciplines in a team environment to create multi-discipline design packages for construction
- Work with project engineering, client personnel, and Lead Engineer to resolve project challenges.
- Work within company policy as outlined in the H+M Employee Handbook as well as the H+M Safety Manual and OSHA Safety rules.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- 10+ years of I&E design experience utilizing AutoCAD with at least 5+ years as a lead designer.
- Experience leading multiple fast-paced small to mid-capital heavy industrial midstream and downstream projects simultaneously.
- Experience with design of instrumentation and electrical systems located in electrically hazardous (Classified) locations per NEC.
- Knowledgeable of Instrumentation & Electrical material specifications to the extent that all information required for material purchase, fabrication, and construction is reflected on the finished drawings.
- Knowledge of standard instrumentation and electrical design, drafting, and installation practices.
- An understanding of applicable industry standards including the National Electrical Code (NEC), International Society of Automation (ISA), American Petroleum Institute (API) recommended practices, Process Industry Practices (PIP), and National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association (NEMA) guidelines.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, technical design standards, Piping and Instrument Diagrams, and other technical drawings.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and to effectively communicate with team members, clients and other project stake holders.
- Ability to perform calculations related to sizing electrical motor control & distribution equipment, wire sizing including voltage drop, cable tray sizing, conduit/raceway sizing, and grounding/bonding sizing per NEC and client/industry standards.

Environment: Working conditions encountered in this job include those found in a typical office setting as well as an indoor/outdoor manufacturing setting which includes exposure to outside weather conditions, work at elevated heights, climbing of stairs and ladders, and physical manipulation of tools and mechanical equipment. This job demands the use of typical manufacturing personal protective equipment as well as advanced protective equipment as needed.
