About the Job
The Communications Office guides and works closely with BPHC program staff to develop public health awareness campaigns, messaging, and other communications deliverables and works with all forms of media, including press releases and digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio and video and more. The Communications Office also develops communication strategy, handles all press requests, and collaborates with other city departments and the Mayor's Office to amplify public health messages, priorities, and policies.
ROLE:
The Lead Designer works with the Communications Director and the Communications Office to lead creative design and strategy for the Boston Public Health Commission. This includes creating marketing campaigns, flyers, graphics, and reports for digital and print platforms. In addition to creating content, the Lead Designer works with vendors, helps oversee marketing and ad agencies, supports ad buys, and approves merchandise. The Lead Designer also develops the Boston Public Health Commission's branding and creates templates to be used throughout the Commission for various purposes. The Lead Designer understands the Commission's mission and goals, centers equity, and can create impactful campaigns as well as translate health data into understandable data visualizations. DUTIES:
* Lead all creative and marketing projects and are responsible for the overall quality of design work produced by the Commission and contracted vendors
* Create dynamic, multilingual marketing materials, advertisements, billboards, flyers, brochures, posters, graphics, and reports for digital and print platforms
* Develop multimedia campaigns that advance BPHC's goals from concept to design to completion
* Work closely with others in the Communications Office and BPHC staff to develop proactive and creative communication materials and campaigns and make media buys
* Have a deep understanding of how to create consistent, engaging public health-related content
* Work with the Communications Director to develop and maintain brand guidelines and create templates for internal and external use
* Manage staff and coordinate with vendors who develop creative assets, including graphic designers, photographers, and videographers; and proof, edit, approve, and ensure assets meet brand guidelines
* Design and approve merchandise used by the Commission and work with vendors on pricing and printing
* Create and oversee report design, ensuring a high quality of professionalism and brand consistency
* Create graphs, charts, and other types of data visualization to explain public health data
* Organize and manage creative projects, including establishing project timelines, leading meetings, creating project documents, taking meeting notes, following up by email, and keeping projects on deadline
* Build, maintain, and manage creative assets
* Communicate and collaborate regularly with the City of Boston's Creative team and other City departments
* Participate in regular Communications Office meetings
* Work in a confidential capacity. Use excellent judgement, operate independently, and think creatively
* Work to help BPHC advance as an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy
* Perform other duties as assigned
* Passionate commitment to health equity and racial/social justice issues
* Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, inequities in health outcomes, and strategies to advance racial justice and health equity
* Minimum of four (4) to eight (8) years of full-time experience in advertising, marketing, or graphic design
* BA/BS in marketing, advertising, graphic design, digital media, art, communications, public relations, or other related field required
* Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and other platforms to create and edit graphics, photos, and other creative assets
* Experience developing million dollar marketing campaigns and creating and managing content for distribution on various outreach channels
* Excellent written and verbal communications skills with experience distilling complex policies and data into engaging, understandable content
* Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational and planning skills; able to work on multiple projects at the same time with competing priorities
* Able to work flexible hours including some evenings, weekends, and holidays and attend events across the city
* Able to work independently and as part of a team, and to create a welcoming work environment
* Proficient in current and emerging trends
* Comfortable working under pressure and strict deadlines
Preferred or Plus:
* Experience in or familiarity with public health, government, and/or health care sectors
* Experience making content decisions with minimal oversight
* Experience supervising direct reports
* Experience with data and data visualization
* Experience with basic photography and video recording equipment, such as DSLR cameras, lenses, tripods, microphones, gimbals, and more
* Experience making media buys
* Knowledge of Boston neighborhoods
* Proficiency in a language other than English
