This contract to hire role as a Lead Accountant in Chicago, IL is responsible for performing complex, major, unstructured, one-time and ad hoc projects in financial reporting, as needed. Participating in business structure changes such as acquisitions, by negotiating adaptations to reporting processes and structures. Responsible for closing the monthly books and preparing all financial statements and reports and/or one or more highly complex, risky, and visible subsidiaries. Managing the processes and workflow of accountants preparing financial reports for regulatory and management reporting and reviewing all work papers. Evaluating and analyzing the impact of changes in accounts, reporting requirements, or business processes and proposing and documenting changes needed in accounting, reporting, or procedures, keeping all work papers aligned.
Responsibilities:
• Performs complex, major, unstructured, one-time and ad hoc projects in financial reporting, as needed.
• Participates in business structure changes such as acquisitions, by negotiating adaptations to reporting processes and structures.
• Creates ad hoc reports as requested, translating management requests into specific report content and formats.
• Responsible for closing the monthly books, resolving issues, reviewing or preparing all necessary journal entries and account reconciliations, performing analysis, and reviewing or preparing all financial statements and reports or one or more highly complex, risky, and visible subsidiaries. Financial reports are used by senior management for decision-making and for BCBSA and public reporting.
• Reviews and/or performs detailed analysis of business financials used by senior management for decision-making and public reporting, or one or more highly complex, visible, and risky subsidiaries. May include: complex analysis of revenue, enrollment, membership, and/or vendor reports; trend analysis; verification, analysis, and troubleshooting of account data; and recommendations to management.
• Manages the processes and workflow of accountants preparing financial reports for regulatory and management reporting. Reviews all work papers to ensure that specific reporting requirements are met and that work papers are consistent. Troubleshoots especially complex errors and researches challenging questions and unusual cases; answers complex or escalated questions or issues and handles volatile situations.
• Reviews production reports, balancing and reconciling between corporate books and various financial systems.
• Evaluates and analyzes the impact of changes in accounts, reporting requirements, or business processes, and proposes and documents changes needed in accounting, reporting, or procedures, keeping all work papers aligned.
• Represents the department with higher levels of management, with preparation, competence, clarity, diplomacy, and follow-through.
• Creates baseline documentation of procedures and processes, gathering documentation, work papers, and examples. Identifies and implements process improvements. Provides on-the-job training to other Accountants.
• Supports audits by gathering and explaining requested examples, procedures, and supporting information.
• Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with co-workers, management, customers, etc.
• Comply with HIPAA, Diversity Principles, Corporate Integrity, Compliance Program policies and other applicable corporate and departmental policies.
• Maintain complete confidentiality of company business.
• Maintain communication with management regarding development within areas of assigned responsibilities and perform special projects as required or requested.
Job Requirements:
• Support month end close governance such as maintaining and tracking tasks, account reconciliation, and reconciling items, as well as troubleshoot issues with ERP postings.
• Experience with month end close tracking software such as Cadency, Oracle Cloud ERP and query tools like Smartview.
Preferred Job Requirements:
• Supervisory skills including coaching, process improvement, and employee development.
• Experience with financial reporting systems.
• Knowledge of client products and terminology.
• Experience with generally accepted accounting principles and statutory accounting.
