Law Firm Controller/Accountant Overview: As the Law Firm Controller/Accountant, you will be responsible for overseeing the firm’s financial operations, including accounting, billing, budgeting, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with law firm accounting standards. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment and a strong understanding of accounting principles, law firm financial management, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
- Manage the firm’s billing process, ensuring accurate and timely client invoicing, and handling trust account management in accordance with legal and ethical requirements.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
- Assist in budgeting and forecasting, providing guidance on financial planning and analysis to firm management.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statements, and client trust accounts.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations, including preparing and filing tax returns and working with external auditors as needed.
- Implement and monitor internal financial controls to ensure proper financial oversight and prevent errors or fraud.
- Maintain accurate and detailed financial records, ensuring proper documentation for all transactions.
- Work closely with firm leadership to provide financial insights, cost analysis, and profitability assessments.
- Manage financial reporting systems and software to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a law firm or professional services environment.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, law firm accounting, and financial management practices.
- Familiarity with legal billing software
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Clio, or other financial management tools).
- Experience with payroll processing and benefits administration.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and provide actionable insights.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both financial and non-financial staff.
- Knowledge of state and federal tax regulations and compliance requirements.
