Position Overview:
The Landfill Engineering Manager will oversee the design, operation, and maintenance of landfill sites, ensuring that all environmental, regulatory, and safety standards are met. This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to manage a team of engineers and technicians. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in landfill engineering, waste management, and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Landfill Design & Development: Lead the design, permitting, and implementation of landfill expansions, closures, and new landfill sites. Oversee the preparation and review of plans, technical reports, and studies related to landfill operations.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including waste management, groundwater protection, and landfill gas management. Stay updated on regulations and industry trends.
Team Leadership & Project Management: Supervise and mentor a team of engineers and environmental professionals. Lead projects from conception through completion, managing budgets, timelines, and resources efficiently.
Environmental Monitoring: Oversee the development and implementation of environmental monitoring programs, including groundwater sampling, leachate management, and landfill gas monitoring systems.
Safety & Risk Management: Develop and implement safety procedures for landfill operations. Ensure adherence to safety standards and protocols to minimize risk to employees, contractors, and the surrounding community.
Budgeting & Cost Control: Manage and track project budgets, providing regular updates and ensuring cost-effective solutions without compromising quality or safety.
Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with regulatory agencies, local communities, contractors, and other stakeholders to address concerns, ensure compliance, and manage external relationships.
Innovation & Sustainability: Identify and implement innovative and sustainable engineering practices to improve landfill operations, reduce environmental impact, and enhance operational efficiency.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).
Experience:
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in landfill engineering or a related field, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership or management role.
- Extensive experience in landfill design, operations, environmental compliance, and project management.
- Proven track record of successful project delivery and team management.
Certifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or other relevant certifications are a plus.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations (RCRA, CERCLA, etc.) and industry best practices for landfill operations.
- Expertise in landfill design software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS, GeoStudio).
- Ability to manage complex projects and budgets.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including outdoor settings.
- Ability to travel to project sites, which may involve site inspections, meetings with stakeholders, and regulatory reviews.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment (up to 30 lbs) during site visits.
