Job Summary As a Laborer, you will support the build and repair of steel vessels and assist with various maintenance tasks within the shipyard. This entry-level position offers on-the-job training and provides the chance to develop skills while working in an exciting, fast-paced environment. You'll be working on Great Lakes vessels during the winter, which means you will be exposed to the elements, adding a unique challenge to the role. Responsibilities
- Perform various physical tasks as directed, including moving, securing, installing, building, and unloading materials such as steel, dirt, and trash.
- Maintain safety standards and ensure a safe work environment at all times.
- Assist with specialized tasks that may require on-the-job training.
- Operate heavy and light equipment, as needed, depending on the jobsite or assignment.
- Transport tools, equipment, and materials as instructed by supervisors.
- Remove preservative coatings as required and act as a fire watch when necessary.
- Follow directions and support the shipyard team in completing various tasks.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Basic knowledge of standard practices in manufacturing environments.
- Ability to follow directions and work effectively under supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and focus on safety at all times.
- Ability to communicate clearly with co-workers and supervisors.
- Knowledge of general hand tools, including hammers, shovels, grinders, and tape measures.
- Willingness to learn new duties and responsibilities through on-the-job training.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a similar industry is preferred but not required.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Must be able to pass a drug screen.
- Ability to report to various locations, with the primary location being Fraser Shipyards.
Physical Requirements
Position requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, overhead work, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to work in tight, confined spaces, such as accessing manholes, and awkward positions for long periods of time. Must be able to conduct inside and outside work in all temperatures. Use of manufacturing equipment. Work in environment where harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, gases, etc. might be present and the use of a respirator may be required. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions/areas that at times are not environmentally controlled. Able to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs.
