Job Summary:
A Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing diagnostic testing, analyzing laboratory specimens, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of results. Working in clinical or research laboratories, Laboratory Technologists use various analytical techniques and instruments to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. They follow established protocols, maintain equipment, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Specimen Collection and Preparation:
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens (e.g., blood, urine, tissues) for analysis according to established protocols.
- Ensure proper labeling and handling of specimens to avoid contamination or misidentification.
- Prepare samples for analysis, ensuring appropriate storage conditions and processing methods.
- Laboratory Testing and Analysis:
- Perform a variety of diagnostic tests using automated and manual laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, and analyzers.
- Conduct hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, and molecular biology tests, as per the laboratory’s scope of practice.
- Analyze test results, ensuring that they meet quality control standards and reporting abnormal results to appropriate personnel.
- Quality Control and Calibration:
- Regularly check and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and precise test results.
- Monitor and maintain quality control procedures, including reviewing internal and external quality assessments and proficiency testing.
- Document and report any discrepancies, troubleshooting issues with equipment or processes to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Record Keeping and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of laboratory test results, equipment calibration, and maintenance logs.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA) in the handling of patient information and laboratory data.
- Prepare and maintain lab reports, as well as assist with interpreting test results when required.
- Laboratory Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and hazardous materials handling.
- Follow infection control and biohazardous waste disposal procedures.
- Ensure laboratory work areas are kept clean, organized, and in compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with physicians, pathologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate test results and assist in diagnosis.
- Communicate findings or discrepancies with appropriate team members in a timely manner.
- Provide assistance in training or mentoring junior laboratory staff, when applicable.
- Laboratory Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Order and restock supplies as needed to ensure that testing processes are not interrupted.
- Coordinate equipment repairs and calibrations with external vendors, as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field from an accredited program.
- Certification or licensure as required by state or federal law (e.g., ASCP, AMT, CLS, or equivalent).
- Experience:
- Previous experience as a laboratory technologist or in a laboratory setting is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment, testing protocols, and safety procedures is a plus.
- Skills:
- Strong technical skills in laboratory analysis and equipment operation.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety, quality control, and regulatory standards.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to troubleshoot issues with laboratory equipment or procedures.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and report test results.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining accuracy.
