GENERAL PURPOSE:
A full-time Lab Technician IV position is available to provide direct research and teaching/training support for the Awad Lab in the Center for Musculoskeletal Research (CMSR). Funded by several grants from NIH, the Awad lab research projects lie at the intersection of engineering, biology, and medicine with a focus on understanding, diagnosing, and treating musculoskeletal conditions.
The successful candidate will report directly to Prof. Hani Awad, Principal Investigator, and will interact daily with a diverse group of lab members that include post-doctoral fellows, undergraduate and graduate students, and technicians. They will be expected to work under general guidance and with latitude for exercising independent technical judgment, and perform research related activities. This position does not supervise others but will help orient and train lab members.
Hours of the position are 8:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday (flexible), work on limited weekends (very rarely) may be required. Schedule varies based on operational needs.
**JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Perform general lab management tasks, including ensuring timely input of lab orders, preparing reagents and other solutions, managing lab inventory including purchasing of supplies and services, and maintaining general lab cleanliness and lab safety requirements. Compliance issues such as IBC, EH&S, Fire Safety, and UCAR inspections. Maintain computerized inventory, MSDS, and data sheet records.
+ Primary responsibility for animal (rodent) colony management – typically mice. Animal husbandry to include weaning, pairing, tail snip, and inventory maintenance. Data entry into established database and spreadsheet for management of animal colonies; inventory control of animal numbers and UCAR accounts.
+ Assist in animal experiments. Experiments include recovery surgeries, non-recovery tissue harvests, perfusions, and multimodal imaging (micro CT and IVIS).
+ Preform genotyping of transgenic mice by PCR. Assist and perform routine biochemical and molecular biological experiments (protein isolation, DNA/RNA isolation, gel electrophoresis).
+ Work closely with animal care staff and technicians for scheduling surgical procedures and post-operative care of animals.
+ Search literature for reference to technical problems involved in research projects and keep abreast of trends in field of interest by reading professional journals and attending seminars.
+ Keep a detailed electronic lab notebook (LabArchive) with experimental detail, methods, data compilation and analysis. Prepare charts, graphs and tables; and assist in the preparation of materials for publication.
+ Teach laboratory techniques and experimental procedures to students and laboratory technical support staff.

**QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 4-5 years specialized experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
+ 1-2 years experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
+ Computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and 3D image rendering and analysis software such as AMIRA. People and organizational skills preferred. Opportunities for training and continuing education are available.

**Pay Range**
Pay Range: $ 18.89 - $ 26.44 Hourly
