HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician II to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors within various pathology activities, including but not limited to receipt and accessioning of specimens, preparation of tissue for analysis and storage/cataloguing of tissue and data. Provides additional support in various areas of a laboratory as needed. Complies with laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) plans and procedures.
This position will be in support of Department of Defense/Uniformed Services University Brain Tissue Repository (BTR). Their mission is to better understand the effects of traumatic brain injury and promote overall brain health of the warfighter. Using the best science, they support our service members and their families to help care for our military personnel after a head injury.

**This role may require after-hours scheduling or weekend hours to accommodate laboratory needs.**
Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.
Responsibilities:- Provides assistance to senior laboratory technicians and research staff for tissue processing and dissection, and preparation for analysis
(embedding, staining and cutting). - Assists with data entry of samples into the biospecimen inventory system (BSI).
- Maintains inventory of supplies and materials needed for laboratory operations; assists with procurement procedures when needed.
- Receives and logs in daily shipments, stores appropriately, and notifies pertinent personnel. Ensures adequate inventory/supplies for laboratory use.
- Assists in daily freezer monitoring and entering temperature data into the temperature log book; assists in Eyewash equipment
maintenance and recording information into the maintenance log book. Assists with monitoring chemical and biohazard waste collection
and removal process. - Assist with shipping kits production and shipment of specimens; assists in scheduling and transporting of dry ice pellets etc. This implies the individual should expect to lift weights equivalent to 50lbs. per box of dry ice.
- Documents testing results and records observations in accordance with good practice quality guidelines and regulations (GCxP), standard
operating procedures and protocol requirements. - May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of
and participation in required training for role.
Education and Experience
- Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's degree preferred in Life Sciences
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Technical knowledge of scientific disciplines.
- Knowledge of and skill in laboratory technique and handling biological and chemical hazards and their safe use and disposal.
- experience with receiving, documenting, and processing tissue specimens.
- Able to label, store, and document tissue samples
- Experience shipping samples required, International Air Transport Association (IATA) certification preferred
- Experience managing inventory and ordering supplies as needed
- Adhere to all lab standards, protocols, storage, and disposal processes.
- Experience using specimen freezers and refrigerators
- Understanding of good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and other ethical guidelines associated with safe handling of patient information in adherence to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Physical Capabilities
- Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Security Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
