JOB SUMMARY
The Biological Sciences (BIOL) Department at the University of Connecticut is seeking to fill a 10-month (August to May) Laboratory Technician 1 position beginning January 2024. The successful candidate will provide technical support for high-enrollment BIOL undergraduate laboratory courses on the Storrs campus. This position supports undergraduate laboratory courses. The expected work hours will be Monday through Friday from 12 pm to 8 pm, which includes one hour for lunch. The incumbent is expected to work flexible work hours depending on departmental course offerings which could shift to earlier hours when courses are not in session.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare and test routine laboratory experiments for BIOL 1107.
- Identify and resolve routine problems with experimental methods and techniques, with periodic recourse to the supervisor.
- Assist with the modification of laboratory setup as needed.
- Assist with establishing preparation manuals for the undergraduate laboratory courses including standard operating procedures, experimental checklists, and safety documentation.
- Participate in meetings to plan or evaluate lab experiments; make modifications to incorporate suggestions for improvement.
- Assist with the editing and updating of laboratory manuals for BIOL 1107, and keeps current on new procedures.
- Prepare solutions, bacterial media, stains, enzymes, reagents, and other lab supplies or apparatus needed to implement the weekly laboratory exercises; maintain bacterial cultures and stocks; dissect preserved specimens for student observation.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of chemicals, supplies, specimens, bacterial cultures, and equipment.
- Set up and maintain equipment for laboratory classrooms including the inspection and cleaning of equipment after student usage. Assist others in the proper and safe use of equipment.
- Assist with the daily cleaning of laboratory classrooms and laboratory glassware.
- As needed, assist with the preparation of reagents and supplies for BIOL 1107.
- Assist with the enforcement of laboratory safety procedures.
- Ensure cleanliness and proper working order of laboratories. Performs maintenance and minor repair of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Work assigned schedule, which varies by semester to support morning, afternoon, and evening classes.
- Perform related tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s of Science in biology or a related field and one to two years of experience, or equivalent education and experience.
- Familiarity with concepts, practices, safety protocols, and standard laboratory procedures in biology. Knowledge of chemical and biohazardous waste handling and processing.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly explain laboratory procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in biology or a related field.
- Laboratory experience in a high-volume academic, or clinical, setting.
- Experience writing and communicating laboratory protocols.
- Ability to work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time, 10-month, permanent position. The expected work hours will be Monday through Friday from 12 pm to 8 pm which includes one hour for lunch. The incumbent is expected to work flexible work hours depending on departmental course offerings which could shift to earlier hours when courses are not in session.
