Laboratory Assistant Coordinator
Full Time; 1st Shift; 8:00am-4:30pm; FTE 1.0
Location: Rock Island, IL
The Laboratory Assistant Coordinator assists the Laboratory Assistant/ Phlebotomist in process improvement of the pre-analytic, analytic and post analytic clinical laboratory services. Specifically, the Laboratory Assistant Coordinator assures those processes related to specimen handling/retention; quality control, POC testing, and result reporting in compliance with CAP. The Laboratory Assistant Coordinator shall work at the Laboratory Assistant/ Phlebotomist to fulfill strategic and performance improvement initiatives. Responsibilities:Key Accountability - Leadership
- The Laboratory Assistant Coordinator, Laboratory:
- Works up to 20% on administrative activities and 80% on clinical workload as scheduling, staffing and workload allows.
- Assists Laboratory Assistant Lead in the day to day operations of the Phlebotomy department
- Assists in attaining the institutional goals by recommending and promoting the development, preparation, implementation, and attainment of departmental goals, policies, and projects so as to improve quality, availability, and accessibility of services and information.
- Is a key figure in ensuring that timely and accurate clinical information is provided to healthcare professionals to ensure patient care, patient and provider satisfaction is maintained at highest
- Assists with the resolution of complex Phlebotomy problems and issues, utilizing resources as needed and providing consultation and advice.
- Assists the Laboratory Assistant’s in developing and assuring the continuing effectiveness of all Phlebotomy, clerical and quality improvement activities in the Laboratory. These activities include equipment and test validation, staff training, troubleshooting, procedure updating, result reporting, and quality assurance documentation is kept as appropriate.
- Supervise phlebotomy training for staff.
- Assist with training new employees, being helpful and supportive in the teaching of all new associates.
- Assists with associate screening, hiring, orientation, training and competency evaluation.
- Communicates clearly, openly, and consistently with management and staff to assure common access to hospital and department information to promote trust and confidence.
- Recommends or modifies policies to enhance the effectiveness of present operations.
- Recommends and adjusts department procedures and services as necessary for improved patient care, physician relations, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
- Evaluates employee performance following orientation and annually, using established performance criteria and ensuring all staff meets expectations.
- Evaluates and improves workflow of pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes for accuracy and timeliness in support of operations.
- Evaluates and maintains all process change in Medialab documentation control.
- Demonstrates behavior consistent with Trinity’s Standards of Behavior, FOCUS and AIDET practice.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Key Accountability – Compliance/Strategy
- Complies with procedures and services in consultation with the assigned Laboratory Asst. Coordinator.
- Performs technical procedures within specified turnaround time for assigned area.
- Assures that QA guidelines are strictly followed.
- Is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices of the department in order to meet necessary standards, recommendations and requirements of voluntary and government agencies (ie. CAP, JCAHO)

Education:
| High School diploma or equivalent | Phlebotomy course Medical Assistant Associate of Arts |
Experience:
| Three to five years of Hospital Phlebotomy experience.
| Experience with phlebotomy is desirable. Must maintain PBT or equivalent certification. ASCP specialist or equivalent in phlebotomy is preferred. Must possess excellent communication skills. Must read, write, and speak fluent English |
License(s)/Certification(s): | ASCP certified or equivalent. If not certified, has 6 months to become certified. |
