Position Overview: We are seeking an Associate Attorney to join our dynamic and growing labor and employment law team. This position will involve a mix of union representation, including collective bargaining, arbitration, and other labor relations matters, as well as individual employee representation in employment discrimination, wrongful termination, and wage and hour disputes. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in labor law and be committed to advocating for workers' rights in both union and non-union environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent unions and individual employees in legal matters related to labor and employment law, including collective bargaining negotiations, grievances, arbitration, and unfair labor practices.
- Advise and counsel clients on legal issues related to workplace rights, employee protections, wage and hour laws, discrimination, and wrongful termination.
- Draft, review, and negotiate collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), settlement agreements, and other legal documents.
- Litigate cases in state and federal courts, including filing complaints, motions, discovery, depositions, and trials.
- Collaborate with senior attorneys and clients on case strategy and legal approaches.
- Participate in settlement negotiations and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes.
- Stay informed about developments in labor and employment law, including changes in state and federal regulations.
- Attend hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and other legal proceedings as required.
- Provide regular client updates and ensure exceptional client service throughout the legal process.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the Michigan State Bar (or eligibility to waive in).
- 0-3 years of experience in labor and employment law, preferably with experience in both union and individual employee representation. Candidates with relevant internships, clerkships, or experience in labor law will also be considered.
- Knowledge of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), Michigan labor laws, and other relevant federal and state employment regulations.
- Strong writing, research, and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral communication skills and ability to advocate effectively on behalf of clients.
- A strong interest in labor and employment law, particularly in representing workers and unions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple cases and priorities.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in collective bargaining and labor arbitration.
- Familiarity with public sector labor law or government employment matters.
- Spanish-language proficiency is a plus but not required.
