Summary of Essential Functions
- Assists in clinical supervision and coordination of the Labor and Delivery unit, Obstetric Emergency Department, Antepartum, & L&D OR/PACU staff in providing competent, efficient, technical support as well as attentive, supportive patient care.
- Assists the Manager in providing nursing leadership to the unit and overseeing the clinical operations of the Labor and delivery unit.
- In collaboration with other members of the leadership team, provides ongoing assessment of the quality of patient care services provided in the department and serves as the clinical and administrative resource to the department.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. ADN required. BSN preferred.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Registered with the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas or an Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
- CPR, ACLS, and NRP required.
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring required.
- Specialty certification in area of specialty required.
- 1-3 years of professional nursing experience required.
- Minimum 1 year of Charge RN experience required.
- May have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in lieu of specific education and/or experience as stated above.
- Demonstrates competency in the care of patients.
- Maintains efficiency and control. Performs under stress when confronted with critical or unusual situations.
- Sets priorities, makes decisions based on available data and supervises others.
- Remains current in continuing education in both nursing profession and in the field of specialty.

- Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- Standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
- Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling of heavy objects.
- Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours.
- Some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
- Responsible for the staffing and management of patient care in each of his/her units as first line coverage.
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of the nursing process.
- Participates and cooperates in the unit-based Quality Improvement processes.
- Supports, maintains and provides an environment which is supportive of quality patient care through effective use of resources and personnel.
- Practices, develops and endorses customer service skills in relationships with internal and external customers.
- Serves as the patient and family advocate with respect to patient's right to privacy by protecting confidential information.
- Plans and implements patient care and teaching based on a total assessment and the age of the patient.
- Evaluates and documents patient response; monitors and recognizes changes in physiological and psychosocial
- Clinical Role Model - Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical skills and the ability to support others to achieve the delivery of quality care. Functions as a resource person for staff members and assists in necessary education of individual members of the nursing staff. Assumes responsibility for the overall quality of nursing care provided for the unit, in collaboration with the Manager & Director.
- Leadership - Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competency in leadership, supervision, and management of staff. Assumes responsibility for direction and coordination of all functions in the absence of the Manager & Director.
