Job Description

VI. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Patient and Staff Safety:

Recognizes the importance of patient/staff safety precautions as it relates to specific department and area of responsibility.
Consistently utilizes precautions and follows appropriate procedures to enhance patient/staff safety in daily operations.
Identifies and reports any potentially dangerous situations to manager which could cause medical error and / or patient or staff harm.
Immediately takes action, where appropriate, to minimize the risk of injury. Where appropriate to staff member’s responsibilities, reports errors, when these occur, to supervisor and on an Occurrence Report. Participates, when appropriate, in Root Cause Analyses and/or other efforts to reduce risk of medical error and / or patient or staff harm.

2. Performance Improvement:

Participates in performance / customer service improvement; actively assists in improving performance based on results obtained from customer satisfaction / PI activities.
Where appropriate, participates in Performance Improvement activities, including team membership.

3. Testing Procedures:

Performs technical laboratory functions.
Logs in and performs routine and advanced test procedures under on-site supervision.
Performs basic and advanced immunohistochemistry and cytology procedures; embeds and cuts tissue; prepares and stains slides using basic special stain techniques.
Prepares frozen sections.
Assists pathologist with grossing specimens as needed.
Demonstrates understanding of and complies with all legal, regulatory, ethical practice standards and imperatives relevant to the laboratory setting.

4. Reporting Responsibilities:

Reports test results following established clinical protocols.
Alerts supervisor and / or management personnel immediately regarding “red flag” results.
Keeps management apprised of trends, developments, outcomes that fall outside of standard policy or procedure.

Assists with training new personnel.
Functions as Shift Supervisor in the absence of Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor and Histology Technologist III.
Assists with coordination of section duties in the absence of Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor and Histology Technologist III.
Takeson-call as necessary..

8. Environment of Care:

Controls and maintains a safe, comfortable environment.
Incorporates the principles of Standard Precautions in accordance with hospital policy; maintains sterile environment where applicable.
Complies with all National Patient Safety Goals.

9. Quality Assurance:

Performs, records and evaluates appropriate Quality Control.
Responds promptly to emergency calls/disaster plan.
Maintains personal professional competency through in-service and meeting attendance.
Assists with training and orientation of new employees.
Maintains a safe, orderly working environment; maintains compliance with OSHA regulations.
Ensures that HIPAA regulations are adhered to.
Ensures that Joint Commission standards are adhered to.
Ensures that PMHC corporate compliance policies are adhered to.
Adheres to hospital and department mission statements, policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Position Qualifications:

Education/Training:

Associates Degree in Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, or related science required.
Excellent verbal communication skills required.
Must be computer literate; familiarity with data entry required.
Demonstrated knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications and testing procedures.
Demonstrated knowledge of use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
Ability to read, write and communicate in English required.

Experience

Licensure, Registration or Certification:

Current / valid NYS License as Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histological Technician required.
ASCP Certification or equivalent required.
