Summary
The incumbent will perform metallurgical sample preparation
analysis and testing to support technical problem solving
new product development and process validation.
Key Position Results
- Safely carry out sample preparation
tracks and store samples
and accurately inputs the sample and testing data into database.
- Safely performs mechanical and metallurgical testing and analysis
and accurately inputs the data and test results into database.
- Operates laboratory equipment independently following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Generates timely and accurate test results summaries
summarizes observations and conclusions in a standard report.
- Follows up with equipment manufacturers on testing methodology updates and continue to update SOPs to reflect new methodologies.
- Effectively and efficiently communicates the data to team members.
Key Duties and Responsibilities% of Time Spent Performing Tasks
- Perform sample preparation and laboratory testing.
- Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment and sample storage area & ensure traceability.
- Organizes data for presentation to project teams.
- Participates in safety and continuous improvement activities. Lead projects to improve safety & workflow.
Critical Skills
Knowledge and Abilities
- Consistently practices safe work habits in a laboratory and industrial environment
- Ability to follow test procedures and written instructions
- Details oriented and focused
- Comfortable working with power/cutting tools
machine shop and metallurgical sample preparation equipment
- Advanced skills with Microsoft office software (specially MS Excel
and MS Word).
- Prior laboratory experience (including but not limited to metallurgical and mechanical testing equipment operations)
- Hand on - can do attitude coupled with superior communication skills
- Knowledge of chemistry
mechanical testing results
metallurgical images
and chemical safety
Education/ Training Required
- 3+ years of lab experience in comparable position (e.g. school
prior/current role) preferred

1) Describe the decisions and independent judgements made by incumbents in this position.
- Recognizes unsafe work conditions and reports them to supervisors.
- Modifies and updates standard testing as appropriate to generate necessary data.
2) Describe the decisions made by incumbents in this position that are based on defined process or parameters. Attach copies of any applicable decisions' templates or procedures.
- Selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for assigned tasks.
- All testing covered by published Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
3) Describe how the discretionary decisions and independent judgements affect operating income or other matters of significance.
- Material sample preparation (for mechanical testing and metallurgical examination) and storage must be completed
accurately input in the system
and effectively communicated in the requested timeline to resolve immediate customer related issues
and product/process development.
- Mechanical and metallurgical testing (including data generation) must be completed in the requested timelines to support technical problem solving and product development.
- The testing must be complete and accurate calling for attention to details and a developed ability to judge the accuracy of the results prior to reporting.
- Testing outcomes must be compiled in an organized manner for timely interpretation of findings.

- Manager reviews data generated.
- Technicians are encouraged to make recommendations on safety
sample preparation and testing methodology improvements.
