Operations Manager, Process Analytics

onebio is a fast-paced, biotechnology spinout from UC Davis creating ingredients for food and biopharmaceutical applications. We use proprietary technology to create novel oligosaccharides from natural products, with a focus on producing ingredients that beneficially modulate the microbiome and immune function.

Overview:

The Lab Operations Manager will oversee the daily operations of our process analytics lab, managing a team of five research associates and senior research associates. The Process Analytics Team is responsible for using standardized and validated methods to analyze food and fiber samples that are undergoing commercial development and scaleup. The team is responsible for providing quick and reliable results for the development of a novel oat fiber ingredient. The Lab Operations Manager’s responsibilities will encompass both team management and hands-on contribution to meet project deadlines as necessary.

This role is pivotal in ensuring high-quality, rapid turnaround of data to support R&D, engineering, process chemistry, and pilot plant teams, enabling the company to maintain the pace of innovation and scale-up efforts.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of five analytics lab staff (technicians, research associates, and senior research associates).
• Onboard new team members and oversee training in sample accessioning, data analysis, and reporting.
• Oversee daily analytics lab operations, ensuring efficiency and adherence to SOPs.
• Collaborate with R&D and other departments and provide feedback necessary to adapt assay SOPs for specific applications.
• Perform hands-on work as needed to fill gaps and support project completion.
• Manage the Process Analytics Team budget with support from a laboratory admin.
• Act as the primary liaison between the analytics lab and R&D, engineering, process chemistry, and pilot plant teams.
• Prioritize fast data turnaround to accelerate iteration cycles for scale-up and product development.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a technical science field (chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology, or food science).
• 3-5 years of management experience in a lab environment.
• Hands-on expertise in analytical techniques, with familiarity in LC/MS recommended.
• Knowledge of carbohydrates, metabolomics, or biomolecules is a plus.
• Strong leadership, team-building, and communication skills.
• Ability to enforce SOPs and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
• Experience creating a positive, motivating work environment for operational teams.

· The salary range for this position is $96,000-$118,000
