About the Job
We are seeking a full-time formulation manager, to lead all formulation and flavor development and commercialization across the Statehouse portfolio of brands: Dime Bag, Kingpen, Kingroll, Fuzzies, Smokiez, Loudpack, Sublime, Urbn Leaf and Harborside – with more to come. This role will work closely with manufacturing and supply chain, and partner with the VP of Brands on ideation, surveying/focus panels, brand development/strategy, and the commercialization of products from ideation through production. Product development scope includes innovation, productivity, and brand stewardship, with a focus on innovation and identifying and leading white space exploration.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Drives innovation and formulation pipeline across all brands and manufactured product lines – Infused Flower, Vape, Prerolls, Edibles, Concentrates, and Therapeutics.
• Conduct product development work from bench top prototypes thru scaling-up products and processes for commercialization in support of StateHouse objectives.
• Maximizes the cross utilization of inhouse materials and formulations to drive cost savings and efficiencies through the system. Finds new ways to innovate with on hand ingredients.
• Partner internally and externally to source and trials new terpene, flavoring, and biomass vendors. Tracking and coordinating the ordering, shipping, and delivery of raw ingredients and biomass for R&D Projects.
• Responsible for formulation planning, budgeting and COGS, finding ways to drive efficiencies through all department processes and through the Statehouse system.
• Leads product trials through internal and external sensory panels, creating and compiling survey information and photos to enhance and improve final product formulations.
• Prepping all samples at the facility for R&D/QC team, sensory analysis groups (focus groups) and special marketing events.
• Responsible for formulating terpene blends as needed for production while accurately documenting batch information.
• Flavoring distillate oil with terpenes blends to fulfill pipeline needs.
• Responsible for verifying and documenting weights of material in/out of department.
• Accurately maintain laboratory notebook and generate all required product documentation, including product specifications, formulation sheets, and SOPs.
• Updating the Asana Project Management tool and/or other shared docs and platforms in real-time for all tasks
• Other duties as assigned.
CRITICAL COMPETENCIES
• Thorough knowledge of different Cannabinoids, Terpenes and Extraction methods.
• Thorough understanding of Cannabis regulations and guidelines.

• Knowledge of lab best practices and GMP.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Constantly: Walking, sitting at a desk, grasping/gripping, bending/stooping/squatting, finger dexterity, computer input, coordination of hand and eye.
• Frequently: Standing for long periods of time, climbing stairs, and twisting.
• Occasionally: Reaching above shoulder height, lifting 20-30 lbs., ability to do push/pull motions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
• Preferred BS in a Food Science, chemical engineering or related STEM discipline such as chemistry, biology, mechanical engineering, etc.
• 2+ years of compliance and/or quality assurance experience in any of the following industries: cannabis, pharmaceutical, agriculture, laboratory.
• Strong cannabis regulation and product knowledge.
• Experience with confectionary product development and have gummy development expertise, but also knowledgeable and experienced in chocolate, taffy, tablets, etc.
• Comfortable and experienced in innovating and exploring new spaces and bringing ideas to life via tangible prototypes.
• Ability to plan, design experiments, and problem solve.
• Advanced math skills.
• Strong organizational skills; Ability to multitask at a high level of performance.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word), Smartsheet, Adobe Acrobat
• Experience with new processes implementation, including on-going support
• Understanding & adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations as they pertain to the industry, safety regulations, local municipal codes and organizational rules, regulations, directives and standard operating procedures.
