About the camp
Bear Creek Aquatic Camp is a traditional overnight summer camp owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Located south of Benton, Kentucky, this 183-acre camp has 2.3 miles of shoreline on beautiful Kentucky Lake. Bear Creek offers campers a variety of aquatic sports including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and swimming. Our program hosts Girl Scouts entering grades 4 through 12 with up to 70 campers per session. Programs are run by paid camp staff and Girl Scout volunteers.
About the role
Right now, the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is looking for a full-time Kitchen Manager will lead day-to-day operations of our overnight camp food service for adults and youth. The seasonal Kitchen Manager is responsible for overseeing kitchen staff, providing meals for campers and staff during summer camp program. Duties include menu planning, preparing 3 daily meals, maintaining, cleaning an industrial kitchen, assure health and safety standards, and more. Compensation
The salary for Kitchen Manager (Bear Creek Aquatic Camp) position is $5,350 for the entire seasonal contract.
Staff training will be held May 27 - June 6, with additional training and set-up time for some staff from May 23 - May 25.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee and participate in preparation of the daily camp food service operation.
• Work with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director to order food and kitchen supplies consistent with menus and enrollment counts.
• Communicate with the Health Supervisor to ensure special food requirements for both campers and staff, e.g., food allergies, gluten free and vegetarian diets are managed with utmost importance for 100% accuracy.
• Work with team to plan and prepare nutritionally balanced breakfasts, lunches, and dinners for campers and staff.
• Keep an accurate inventory of food and cleaning supplies.
• Perform routine maintenance, sanitation, and upkeep of equipment, and food service-related facilities.
• Ensure and promote the sanitary integrity of the facility, equipment, and food products.
• Respond appropriately to situations requiring aid, and assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
• Train and supervise the work of the Assistant Kitchen Manager.
• Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT
● Non-traditional and long work hours are expected. Typically, the Kitchen Manager does not work at night and has intermittent downtime throughout the day between meals.
● The Kitchen Manager typically sleeps in the Lodge or nearby, with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and restrooms. The Kitchen Manager may sleep near other staff or campers. The Assistant Kitchen Manager may live off-site.
● The camp kitchen is air conditioned, has manual and mechanical food service equipment, a dish sanitizer, multiple sinks, fridges, countertops, a table workspace, and restrooms.
● This position frequently works with standard kitchen equipment including, but not limited to: freezers, refrigerators, ovens, stove-tops, broilers, microwaves, blenders, mixers, slicers, food processors, commercial dishwashers, knives.
● Exposure to common kitchen cleaners.
● Must have interpersonal skills/behaviors (i.e. working with individuals with a range of moods & behaviors in a tactful, congenial personal manner, so as not to alienate, or antagonize them).
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
● Must possess, or be willing to obtain Safe-Serve food safety
● Must possess, or be willing to obtain, current First Aid/CPR certification.
EXPERIENCE
● Minimum of 6 months of customer service.
● Minimum of 6 months experience in an industrial kitchen, required.
● Minimum of 6 Months - 1 year of prior Kitchen or restaurant management.
● Prior experience cooking and serving 50-150 people per day, required
● Documented experience in meal preparation for those with restricted diets and/or food allergies, required.
SPECIFIC SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
● 21+ years of age
● Meet state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment
● Strong communication, written, and public speaking skills
● Demonstrate a recognition and understanding of good customer service in all dealings and interactions as an employee of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana by maintaining constructive relationships with co-workers, girl members, parents, volunteers, and the community.
● Adaptable and flexible within a fast-paced working environment
● Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Develops alternative solutions; Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
● Organized and consistent
● Able to pull up to an overview of the entire goal and problem solve accordingly
● Must have valid driver's license with a safe driving record meeting company standards
● Must be able to work non-traditional hours including early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends.
POSITION COMPETENCIES
● Proficient understanding of sanitation and regulations for workplace safety.
● Proficient understanding of nutrition guidelines, food handling techniques, preparation (including safe preparation of food for those with restricted diets and allergies) and cooking procedures.
● Must understand and comply with food safety and temperature standards.
● Must understand safe use of common kitchen cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
● Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
● Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
● Must be able to work quickly and efficiently.
● Must be able to work well as part of a team.
● Access to reliable transportation
