Job Summary
This position is 40 hours per week.
This position is an entry-level position responsible for the health and welfare, safety and security of juveniles detained at the Juvenile Detention Center. Duties include supervising, monitoring, and providing care for juvenile offenders and other court-involved youth in a confined, 24-hour maximum security facility. Work is assigned, scheduled and evaluated under the general direction of Detention Shift Supervisors and in conjunction with the Juvenile Court Management team.
TOTAL COMPENSATION: $61,240 - $85,707 annually. Total compensation is an estimate based upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave). The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

Thank you for considering the Spokane County Juvenile Court as a potential employer. Juvenile Court employees are directly responsible for the supervision and/or care of youth under the age of eighteen. As such, applicants undergo an extensive application and selection process as well as a thorough background investigation.
The effectiveness of the Juvenile Court is directly related to the quality of personnel employed by the Court and the level of public trust in those personnel. As a result, the following extensive application process is designed to elicit information to assist us in determining your character, suitability, and competence for the position for which you have applied.
Failure to complete the entire application, whether intentionally or unintentionally, will result in your removal from consideration.
In addition, the background investigation may include, but is not limited to: an interview(s); employer reference checks; polygraph test; criminal and driving records. Failure of any portion of the background investigation will be "cause" for removal from consideration. Upon completion of the background investigation, each candidate's suitability is reviewed by Juvenile Court Administration.
The polygraph test is conducted using the information you have submitted and the Integrity Standards for Juvenile Court. Thank you for your interest in Spokane County Juvenile Court.
Examples of Duties
(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:)
+ Serves as a positive role model for juveniles detained at the center.
+ Leads group and individual discussions; teaches classes to encourage law abiding behavior; reports on behavior of youth; and works in coordination with Probation staff, Medical and Treatment staff, Teachers, Community Agencies, Judges, Prosecutors and Defense Attorneys.
+ Searches (pat downs and strip) and removes personal property.
+ Reviews social files and gathers information to establish criteria for admittance or release from detention; and completes the appropriate forms.
+ Contacts parents, guardians, caseworker, probation counselor or parole counselor; and consults with supervisor on releases and shift problems.
+ Provides orientation on facility rules and regulations.
+ Provides for health, safety and recreation needs of juveniles in the Juvenile Detention Facility.
+ Checks security of building, doors and windows; and maintains the safety and security of juveniles while detained.
+ Oversees youth movement, including meals, showers, room clean up, school, physical training and recreational activities while maintaining safety and security for youth and staff.
+ Provides positive individual and group supervision of juveniles participating in programming and attending to their needs.
+ Escorts youth to and from court while providing security in court.
+ Follows medical orders when dispensing medication to juvenile offenders.
+ Speaks with and de-escalates youth in crisis while maintaining safety and security; intervenes in emergency or crisis situations; and uses physical restraint as necessary to restore order.
+ Maintains and submits written documentation of all incidents concerning youth.
+ Performs janitorial and maintenance tasks related to maintaining physical condition of building; and performs laundry duties.
+ Performs admission and release functions; and maintains records.
+ Serves and occasionally prepares meals; and orders kitchen food and cleaning supplies.
+ Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
Minimum Requirements
+ High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
+ One (1) year working in adult corrections or with youth in a setting such as detention, probation/parole, residential care, recreation, education, community center, institutional, counseling, or a related area required.
+ Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
+ Applicants selected for Juvenile Corrections Officer positions will be required to successfully complete the two (2) week Washington State Criminal justice Training Commission Corrections Officer Academy within the first six (6) months after appointment or within their probationary period.
+ Must possess and maintain a valid Food Handlers Card.
+ First Aid, CPR and AED certification required.
+ Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire, and successfully pass a criminal background check, polygraph test, physical examination, physical abilities test, and drug test.

PAID TIME OFF
Spokane County Observed Holidays
Up to 10 (ten) paid holidays are observed by Spokane County.
PTO
Non-represented and a select group of represented employees receive a bank of hours that combine both vacation and sick leave into a paid time off bank. There is no waiting period to use this time and it starts out at almost 2 days per month accrual increasing in accrual rates annually for first 5 years.
Vacation
For employees with less than five (5) years of continuous service, the accrual rate is 1 day of vacation each month for a total of 12 days per year. After six (6) months, employees are eligible to take accumulated vacation time. (Please note the vacation time accumulation may vary depending on contract language).
Sick Leave
Sick leave is earned at 1 day per month and can be taken as the days are accumulated.
Other Leaves
Spokane County provides several other paid leaves such as: bereavement leave, jury duty and military duty leave.

Medical Insurance
Two plans are currently available: Premera Blue Cross (PPO) and Kaiser Permanente (HMO). Spokane County pays 95% of the premium for full-time employees and 90% of the premiums for spouses and dependents. Premiums are deducted each pay period (pay periods: 15th and last day of the month).

Group Life Insurance
The County provides a $25,000 group life insurance policy to employees. The County provides a $10,000 benefit for those represented by 492, 492CS & 492CL. This benefit is paid in full by Spokane County.
Long Term Disability Coverage
Provides an income protection benefit in the event of a long-term illness or injury at rate of 60% of income up to a maximum of $5,000 per month. Spokane County pays the full premium for this plan. Deputy Sheriff's receive a benefit through their union for disability.
RETIREMENT
Retirement Plan (401a)
Spokane County employees are automatically included in the Washington State Retirement System. Both the employer and the employee contribute to the plan. This retirement plan provides a guaranteed lifetime monthly benefit once vested and eligible for retirement.
Additional Retirement Plan Option (457b)
Employees may supplement their retirement income and save money on taxes by participating in this optional County program. Roth (after-tax) option is also available through this retirement plan.
VOLUNTARY BENEFITS
AFLAC
Supplemental insurance is optional and is provided by AFLAC to help pay for benefits not covered by major medical insurance. The employee pays 100% of the premium.
Travel Assistance
Provides additional travel protections anytime you travel more than 100 miles from home. Includes pre-trip information, emergency ticket replacement, and emergency evacuation coverage. This benefit is paid in full by Spokane County.
Flexible Spending Plan (FSA)
Spokane County sponsors a Section 125 Flexible Spending Account to allow out-of-pocket Medical & Daycare Expenses to be paid with Tax Free Dollars. Premiums are automatically set up pre-tax under the FSA.
Voluntary Term Life Insurance
Voluntary Term Life Insurance is additional optional life insurance provided through The Standard Insurance. New employees are guaranteed up to $50,000 for self and $20,000 for a spouse with no medical underwriting needed.
