The Design Group is a leading global supplier of turn-key solutions to the Automotive industry, with engineering, manufacturing and support facilities located globally to service our customers. Our primary area of expertise lies in Body-In-White and Assembly automotive tooling, where we engineer production lines to meet our customers' build requirements.
Our head office is based in South Africa, and we have expanded into the US automotive space.
Our new facility in New Hudson, Detroit, MI, Design USA Inc, is currently looking for full-time junior manufacturing design engineers that have a passion for design, a drive to learn, and the ability to think outside the box.
As a turnkey supplier, we have departments encompassing project management, layouts and planning, design and robotic simulation, manufacturing & installation, and controls & PLC.
Job scope (developed incrementally) would include:
- Design and Development
- Conceptualize, design, and develop jigs, fixtures, and tooling for automotive manufacturing processes.
- Create detailed CAD models and engineering drawings using software like FIDES, NX, Catia.
- Ensure designs meet industry standards, safety regulations, and company specifications.
- Perform stress analysis, load testing, and other simulations to ensure durability and performance.
- Collaboration and Coordination
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including production, quality, and maintenance, to ensure seamless integration of tooling into manufacturing processes.
- Liaise with suppliers and vendors to source materials and components required for tooling.
- Coordinate with the automation team to integrate tooling with robotic systems and automated machinery.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Prepare detailed documentation, including design specifications, user manuals, and maintenance guidelines.
- Maintain records of design changes, testing results, and production feedback.
- Generate reports on project progress, design modifications, and performance metrics.
- Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in manufacturing technology, materials, and industry trends.
- Conduct root cause analysis of tooling failures and implement corrective actions.
- Quality Assurance
- Ensure all designs comply with quality standards and regulatory requirements.
- Perform inspections and quality checks on tooling before release to production (if applicable)
- Address any quality issues promptly and implement preventive measures
Prospective applicants for the design department should have:
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written), and collaboration abilities.
- Some form of CAD exposure (we use FIDES, NX, Catia, so training is provided).
- Attention to detail, and a strong sense of responsibility, and must be capable of adhering to deadlines.
- Decent level of Microsoft Office knowledge.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes is preferred (welded fabrication, machining, assembly of tooling).
- Degree or Associates degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, Drafting/CAD qualification
