SUMMARY
The Journeyman Lineman job is a leadership position in the line department that provides supervision and direction for Apprentices and truck drivers to ensure that they operate with a high level of skill by training them in efficient and productive working habits, while also promoting safety in the use of tools and equipment, to minimize accidents which could results in injury or lost time, thus promoting productivity under safe working conditions. This role also helps promote a high standard of morale and team effort for greater job satisfaction. This position coordinates with the Staking Engineers, Control Center, Warehouse personnel and Member Services. The Groundmen, Apprentices & Certified Linemen report to the Journeyman Lineman and he/she reports to the Power Supply Manager.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Schedule the day-to-day operations of the assigned line crew in accordance with GEC procedures, policies and safety regulations.
- Plan a daily schedule which will utilize manpower, equipment, and materials as effectively and productively as possible.
- Assist with or complete performance appraisals for Apprentices and truck drivers.
- Make recommendations for additional help where it could be utilized.
- Make recommendations for additional training, which would increase efficiency and productivity.
- Train subordinates in a manner to minimize accidents.
- Promote and maintain a good attitude and high morale.
- Perform personally, the following:

- Must be capable of planning the work of his/her subordinates assigned to him/her as to timing, methods, operations, construction, retirements, maintenance, service calls and trouble calls
- Receive, assign and direct work orders from the Power Supply Manager, connect and disconnect orders from the office, maintenance and trouble reports from GEC personnel
- Complete daily time sheets and on-time paperwork
- Install or direct the initial installation of poles, wire, equipment and instruments for meter personnel
- Trouble shoot lines, determine cause of trouble and repair
- Maintain an attitude of respect for the public and GEC members when on job, which will reflect well on GEC. Participate in the safety programs and in the training of the line crews as to safety and job training
- Be familiar with the operation of all power operated equipment and hand tools used in line construction
- Positively promote GEC programs such as: Safety, System Restoration, Strategic Planning, Surge Protection, Outdoor Lighting, etc.
- Maintain an attitude of respect for other persons and property, which will reflect well on the Cooperative.
- Responsible for the safety of oneself and that of others, by knowing his/her job and giving it his/her complete attention.
- Remain knowledgeable and familiar with GEC’s safety manual, policies, procedures and all OSHA rules and regulations.
- Participate in all safety programs and assist in the training of subordinates.
- Enforce all safety rules, policies, work practices and regulations.
- Maintain top priority on safety.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
By virtue of education, experience, knowledge, ability, skill or personal attributes, applicants for this position should meet the following specifications:
- Education: High school diploma or GED and certification from an accredited apprenticeship program is required.
- Experience: Must complete apprentice program or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge: Applicant should be familiar with all phases of line work, tools, equipment and safety procedures.
- Leadership/Motivational Skills: Should exhibit ability to lead others through means that are compatible with a positive working environment. Motivation and team building abilities are essential.
- Ability & Skill: Skilled in meeting and dealing with customers; and ability to plan and implement schedules.
- Must be able to work flexible and/or abnormal working hours. Will be required to be on stand-by and work overtime regularly. Volume of overtime varies.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class A CDL license.
- Must have training in First Aid and CPR
- Must represent the company in a professional manner, be a productive team member and have a positive impact on the morale of others.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB
On a frequent basis: lifting, pushing, pulling up to 50 pounds, bending at the waist, gripping tools and objects, stretching or reaching, kneeling, standing, sittings, walking, crouching, twisting (rotating body while in a sitting position), twisting (rotating body while in a standing position), grasping or gripping (to grasp with thumb in opposition to fingers or palm), driving automobile equipment and working alone.
