Job Summary:
Operates press and controls the printing process to produce high-quality custom-printed products. Utilizes the machine to meet or exceed estimating standards without sacrificing quality. Controls and minimizes material usage & waste. Ensures equipment is running at optimum performance at all times. Maintains a clean and organized workplace. Works as a team player.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Ensures that all jobs have marked samples as early as feasible during the run
- Ensures that load tickets are correct and all job-related information is completed and processed properly and that counts are correct. Validation of final load counts before creating paperwork
- Monitors his or her work to ensure consistent quality throughout each job and notifies their supervisor of issues or concerns
- Ensures all job-related information is completed and processed properly IE: counts on jackets, issuing stock, waste calculated properly, marked samples, etc.
- Follows departmental quality control procedures
- Uses all quality control tools (densitometer, conductivity, and pH meter)
- Uses log book to track issues for other shifts and maintenance with detailed information. Lists solutions used to rectify issues in the book
- Consistently keeps paper stock usage under amounts allotted in the estimate
- Calculates waste correctly to prevent under and overruns
- Maintains press speeds that are within or above the estimating standards without sacrificing quality
- Inputs accurate information into the data capture system and verifies shift summary report at the end of shift. Alerts Supervisor when unable to do so
- Assists in teaching fellow team members new skills to improve the team and the company. Cross-trains on other equipment when able
- Improves systems and processes to increase productivity and reduce spoilage
- Utilizes time to ensure that the highest level of production is achieved on a daily basis including shift change and when changing loads
- Ensures materials are present to limit downtime and leaves the next shift set up with adequate supplies to start their shift
- Uses downtime to improve the run ability of equipment
- Communicates job and equipment-related information to workers on other shifts verbally and using the log book
- Ensures maintenance is performed per manufacturers procedures
- Keeps area and equipment clean and organized at all times
- Keeps maintenance logs up to date
- Makes sure the press is ready to perform at optimum performance at all times
- Informs supervisors of needed repairs and maintenance
- Performs minor repairs
- Performs regular maintenance on equipment as required each shift, daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annually, annually, etc.
- Allows time at the end of shift for clean-up and organization of work area
- Able to operate the "GFI AccuBlend" ink mixing machine
- Knows how to convert ink parts into pounds
- Ensures the ink room is kept clean and organized
- Notifies management when ink is low or having quality issues
- Knows and follows all safety procedures
- Operates all equipment in a safe manner
- Is proactive in regard to Safety and encourages proper safety habits in others
- Ensures press and area are OSHA compliant
- Reports work-related injuries to supervisor
- Is aware of lock out tag out procedures and is able to follow them
- Stores hand jacks safely in skids when not in use
- Prevents safety hazards IE: skids on edge, trip hazards, spills, etc.
- Aware of lockout / tag out procedures and able to follow them
- Controls tardiness and the number of unscheduled days off
- Works overtime when needed to satisfy customer demands. Over time may be required because of maintenance needs, scheduled or unexpected repairs, workload, holiday schedules, employee vacations, etc.
- Able to work OT on your normal shift hours, flex hours, weekends, coming in early or staying late as the necessity calls for
- Performs other duties as required

- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Relays issues and information via the established communications logbook as well as verbally
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
- Ability to accurately track a running tally
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Experience as a press helper and 2 to 3 years experience as a press operator.
- Knowledgeable and capable of using micrometers, blanket packing gauges, and densitometers
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
- Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus
- Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud
- Use of proper PPE is required which may include: hearing protection, gloves, masks, face shields, respirators, aprons, closed-toe shoes, etc.
