POSITION SUMMARY:
Maintains building mechanical systems by inspection, performing prescribed maintenance tasks and reporting abnormal conditions.
SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:
No formal supervisory authority. May coordinate the activities of lower classified personnel.
MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Ammeter, Volt meter, micrometer, calipers, vibration meter, leak detector, general maintenance tools and gauges, small hand tools and the like, required for the work.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
In accordance with departmental safety standards:
1. Performs all required inspections of building mechanical equipment and components, ensuring that equipment is in safe and efficient operating condition.
2. Recommends alterations to equipment and changes in procedures to facilitate maintenance.
3. Tests static and dynamic balance and vibration, current draw and temperatures; tests for leaks. Reports abnormal conditions for further action.
4. Replaces and aligns belts and couplers, replaces pulleys. Makes minor adjustments, including tightening nuts, bolts and screws. Lubricates equipment and components. Cleans and replaces filters.
5. Cleans and paints equipment and components and mechanical areas; seals mechanical area floors.
6. Keeps records and makes reports of maintenance performed, condition of equipment, repairs needed, materials used and the like.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School education plus 3-5 years experience as a general maintenance mechanic or 2-3 years experience as a mechanic, preventive maintenance mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Certification required.
