Job Title: IT Network Administrator
Job Overview: An IT Network Administrator is responsible for the configuration, management, and maintenance of an organization’s computer networks. This role ensures that the company’s internal and external network infrastructure is secure, reliable, and optimized for performance. The network administrator collaborates with other IT professionals to maintain the integrity and security of the network while providing technical support to end-users.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Network Configuration & Management:
- Install, configure, and maintain network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, etc.).
- Monitor network performance, ensuring efficient and secure operation.
- Plan and implement network expansions or upgrades as needed.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network issues, including connectivity problems, slow performance, and device conflicts.
- Manage network configurations, IP addressing, and routing protocols.
2. Network Security:
- Implement and monitor network security protocols (e.g., firewalls, VPNs, and encryption).
- Regularly review and update network security policies.
- Respond to security breaches, including identifying vulnerabilities and mitigating risks.
- Perform regular security audits to ensure the network infrastructure is compliant with security best practices and industry standards.
3. Server and System Management:
- Support and maintain internal server infrastructure (e.g., file servers, mail servers, application servers).
- Ensure proper backup and disaster recovery processes are in place for critical network systems.
- Collaborate with system administrators to maintain overall IT infrastructure.
4. Troubleshooting & Support:
- Provide technical support for network-related issues to internal staff and end-users.
- Troubleshoot hardware, software, and network-related problems, offering timely resolutions.
- Document network issues and solutions for future reference.
5. Performance Monitoring & Optimization:
- Monitor network traffic, bandwidth usage, and performance metrics to ensure optimal functionality.
- Analyze network logs and implement improvements to maximize system reliability and performance.
- Identify and resolve network bottlenecks or performance issues.
6. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of network configurations, hardware inventories, and security protocols.
- Prepare reports on network status, performance, and security for upper management.
- Document network changes and configurations as part of standard operating procedures.
7. Collaboration & Training:
- Work closely with other IT team members (e.g., system administrators, security analysts) to ensure cohesive network management.
- Provide network-related training and support to staff members, ensuring effective use of network resources.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest networking technologies, tools, and industry best practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Proven experience as a Network Administrator or similar role.
• Strong knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.).
• Proficiency with network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls, etc.) and software.
• Familiarity with network monitoring and diagnostic tools.
• Knowledge of security best practices and firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, etc.).
• Experience with VPN configuration and troubleshooting.
• Ability to troubleshoot network and system issues.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, or similar.
• Experience with cloud networking and services (e.g., AWS, Azure).
• Knowledge of VoIP and wireless networking.
• Familiarity with network automation tools or scripting languages.
Working Conditions:
• Full-time, typically 40 hours per week.
• On-call availability may be required for network-related emergencies.
• Office environment with occasional remote work depending on the organization.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and move networking equipment (up to 50 lbs).
• Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer.
