Responsibilities
The Activities Assistant will assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care to non acutely ill patients and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurse in charge of the team and/or unit. Activities NA organizes and plans activities for Swing Bed patients based on individual needs within the Swing Bed Program. This includes scheduling a full range of social and recreational activities. The Activities NA contributes to the support of patients through multidisciplinary teamwork. Promotes compliance and support of policies.
- Provides basic care to non-acutely ill patients within the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice that includes actions to meet psychosocial needs and physical needs.
- Provides general aspects of care that meet psychosocial or physical needs or both simultaneously.
- Meets communication needs of patients
- Demonstrates performance reflecting the initiate and responsibility expected of a Nursing Assistant.
- Performs other duties as assigned, with the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice
- Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patient.
- Performs basic patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patients age.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate to the RN any observed changes in patient status and responses. Maintains awareness of the needs of the pediatric, geriatric and general population.
- Demonstrates ability to assist with feeding patients and maintaining fluid balance with technique appropriate for patients’ age and physical condition.
- Provides explanation to patient and family prior to administering care to patient; answers questions within scope of practice.
- Demonstrates ability to provide services within scope of practice.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, coworkers and providers.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patients needs.
- Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of a RN within the Nursing Assistant scope of practice.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Responds to patient in emergency or physically distress situations.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures patient confidentiality.
- Interacts professionally with patient and/or family.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and other departments.
- Meets current documentation stands and policies and completes within shift.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Coordinates and supervises patient care under the direct supervision of an RN
- Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments.
- Physically able to engage in recreational activities with patients
- Organizes, plans, and implements activities programs for all patients in the Swing Bed program based on individualized patient needs in coordination with the multidisciplinary team
- Evaluates patients’ strengths, weaknesses, interests, and individual goals/lifestyle within 72 hours of admission
- Implements a schedule of activities that meet the needs of the individual patient, as well as a diverse patient population
- Maintains required supply inventory and equipment
- Meets with nursing staff to ensure communication on activities plan as indicated by nursing co-worker feedback
- Escort patients to and from Appointments at other locations (travel with ambulette/ taxi)
- Documents patient activities and adjusts activities as indicated
- Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual educational requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty.
- Participates in in-services/educational requirements.
- As a preceptor, assists and supports a new or transferred employee through a planned orientation to a specific clinical area.
- Attends staff meetings on a regular basis.
- Interacts professionally with other disciplines.
- Ensures confidentiality of patients’ records.

Physical requirements:
- Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 lbs. for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
- Occasional balancing, crouching, climbing, hearing, kneeling, reaching, repetitive motion, fit testing
- Frequent typing/clerical/dexterity, grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping
