Fibertek is a leading developer of laser and electro-optic systems for the aerospace community, with key contributions to lasers for atmospheric sensing, laser communications, and lidar sensors for NASA, DoD, and commercial customers. We are seeking interns who will work closely with our teams to support ongoing projects. The Interns will have opportunities to apply academic knowledge, develop technical skills, and gain exposure to industry-leading practices. The Interns will participate in hands-on projects, such as design optimization, prototype development, and system testing. Internships are available across multiple departments such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Purchasing, Accounting, and Quality Assurance.

Electrical Engineering: We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Electrical Engineering Department onsite in Herndon, VA. As part of the Electrical Engineering project team, you will design and develop complex laser and electro-optical systems for military and/or aerospace applications. Duties include circuit design, analysis, and troubleshooting, and other duties as assigned.
Electrical Engineering Internship duties to include:
- Support of PCB design and test
- Support of test firmware development and test
- Cable harness design
Electrical Engineering Internship Additional Minimum Requirements:
- Junior or Senior college student currently enrolled in a BSEE or BSCE degree
- Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout, preferably using Altium
- Experience with FPGA firmware design
- Familiarity with standard electronic equipment (DMM, Oscilloscope, function generator)
- Circuit troubleshooting experience
Mechanical Engineering: We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Mechanical Engineering Department onsite in Herndon, VA. As part of the Mechanical Engineering project team, you will design and develop complex laser and electro-optical systems for military and/or aerospace applications. Duties include creating detailed CAD models and drawings, analyzing systems, initiating procurements, supporting assembly and testing of systems, preparing technical reports, and participating in design review meetings.
Mechanical Engineering Internship duties to include:
- Design ruggedized opto-mechanical laser systems for space and military applications
- Create detailed drawings for parts fabrication and assembly
- Perform structural analyses including modal and fastener margins
- Perform thermal cold plate analyses including pressure drop and chiller requirements
Mechanical Engineering Internship Additional Minimum Requirements:
- Junior or Senior-level college student currently enrolled in a BSME curriculum
- Fundamental proficiency in CAD software, preferably PTC CREO 8.0
- Experience with ANSYS software a plus
Optical Engineering: We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Optical Engineering Department onsite in Herndon, VA. As part of the Optical Engineering project team, you will assist with the building and characterization of laser systems in the lab as well as with data analysis and other support duties as required.
Optical Engineering Internship duties to include:
- Contribute to the development of unique laser designs through design analysis, component specification, and hardware assembly, integration and test
- Coordinate and support the build, alignment, and performance characterization of laser resonators, amplifiers, non-linear frequency conversion modules and receiver components
Optical Engineering Internship Additional Minimum Requirements
- Junior or Senior college student currently enrolled in a Physics or Optical Engineering degree
- Understanding of basic optical principles such as imaging, diffraction, wave propagation, fiber optics, etc.
- Knowledge of laser theory and industry best practices associated with diode pumped solid state and fiber laser systems including continuous wave lasers and Q-Switched lasers locked lasers.
- Competent in laboratory to operate standard equipment (i.e. oscilloscope, camera, etc.) and handle optical components.
- Strong communication and documentation skills for efficient multidisciplinary communication
- Experience with modeling and simulation of laser systems industry standard tools, i.e. Matlab, MathCAD, Zemax or equivalent software tools
Purchasing: We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Purchasing Department onsite in Herndon, VA. As part of the Purchasing project team, you will assist with purchasing good and services according to departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
Purchasing Internship duties to include:
- Expediting Open and Past Due orders in an effort to clean up backlog and aging orders.
- Assisting in placing Purchase Orders, coordinating directly with the Purchasing Dept and other Fibertek staff to process open requests in a timely manner.
- Vendor Database Project – Review of Active vendors and work directly with vendors to obtain new paperwork when needed to meet company requirements. Database system cleanup of Active Vendors and Vendors on Warning.
- Assistance in shipping and receiving, stocking components. Picking and kitting Manufacturing Orders when needed.
Quality Assurance: We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our QA Department onsite in Herndon, VA. The QA intern should be interested in learning about Quality and Lean concepts and will be responsible for handling various duties related to internal processes and data management.
Quality Assurance Internship duties to include:
- Implement a 5S program from start to finish
- Upload files to database
- Under QA Manager supervision, conduct simple inspections
Accounting: We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Accounting Department onsite in Herndon, VA. The Accounting Intern will assist Accounts Payable and Accounting staff in the performance of their regular job duties such as filing, voucher packet preparation and other tasks assigned by the Accounting Manager.
Accounting Internship duties to include:
- Filing, scanning and other related duties
- Voucher processing
- Check run preparation
- Other related tasks as assigned
Accounting Internship Additional Minimum Requirements:
- Progressing toward a degree in Accounting or Business Administration
Business Development: We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Business Development Department onsite in Herndon, VA. As part of our team, you will support capture and proposal efforts to continue the development of complex laser and electro-optical systems for military and/or aerospace applications.
Business Development Internship duties to include:
- Market studies to better understand market projections, competitors, and customers
- Social media marketing to communicate Fibertek's achievements and accomplishments
- Help streamline the capture and proposal writing process by creating a repository and templates for new opportunities
Business Development Internship Additional Minimum Requirements:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Proficient in managing social media accounts
- Experience with business plan formulation or market analysis is a plus
