The Intake Attorney is responsible for analyzing and resolving potential conflicts of interest as a key component of the firm’s new business intake and lateral hiring processes. An Intake Attorney assists the Firm’s attorneys (and their support staff) in drafting and reviewing engagement letters and conflicts waivers/consents. An Intake Attorney works with other members of the Intake & Conflicts Services (ICS) department and the Office of General Counsel in standardizing the firm’s conflicts review and intake process and implementing risk mitigation policies and procedures for the Firm. This is a non-partnership track staff attorney position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides timely and thorough analysis of potential conflicts of interest related to new firm business and lateral attorney candidates.
Drafts conflict waivers, engagement letters, and similar documentation in conformance with firm policies and rules of professional conduct.
Collaborates with Conflicts Researchers, Conflicts Analysts, Intake Manager, ICS Director, Intake Partner, and General Counsel to research, analyze, and resolve conflicts of interest.
Reviews and comments on outside counsel guidelines/policies, requests for proposal, client-generated engagement letters.
Assists with the preparation, implementation, and oversight of ethical walls.
Maintains accurate records of conflict clearance process in firm databases.
Monitors developments in the rules of professional conduct and caselaw related to conflicts of interest (ongoing training requirement).
Completes some legal research regarding conflicts rules in relevant jurisdictions.
Additional duties and special projects as assigned by the ICS Director, Intake Partner, or General Counsel.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Comprehensive working knowledge of ethical, legal, and risk management rules.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply the applicable rules of professional conduct regarding conflicts of interest.
Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills.
Ability to think independently, exercise good judgment, and make decisions when appropriate.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), including the ability to converse authoritatively with attorneys and staff about conflicts issues.
Outstanding customer service, including responsiveness during non-office hours.
Ability to learn new systems and processes quickly and develop expertise based on emerging needs of the law firm.
Strong research skills using internal and external resources. Proven aptitude to quickly learn new applications.
Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to produce a high quality and accurate work product with minimal supervision in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and extremely tight deadline pressure.
Education and/or Experience:
Juris Doctor degree
Member in good standing of a state bar
Minimum of two (2) years of legal experience; conflict analysis and resolution in a law firm setting beneficial.
