Engineer I
This entry level professional position works with a Senior Staff Engineer to learn the business processes, procedures, practices, and regulations associated with the coordination and performance of all aspects of engineering projects including concept design and development, drawings and specifications, project schedules, budget estimates, cost control, code compliance, etc. The incumbent assists in various projects directed to gain the hands-on knowledge necessary to successfully progress within PGW’s engineering schedule.
Engineer II & III
This level professional is an independent contributor to the essential work of engineering project teams. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination, oversight, and performance of all aspects of engineering projects including concept design and development, drawings and specifications, project schedules, budget estimates, cost control, code compliance, supervision of construction, etc. These incumbents work with other professionals who share responsibility for broader business processes providing support and advice to ensure project priorities follow PGW and other regulatory body standards.
Staff/ Sr. Staff Engineer
The Staff/ Sr. Staff Engineer is expected to maintain and improve the Facilities Department engineering processes by planning, performing, and completing engineering project design work within a multi-discipline environment that involves mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, and chemical engineering. The individual is responsible for developing and monitoring facilities projects in addition to coordinating the progression of assignments throughout projects. Facilities Staff Engineers must be capable of performing all the functions of the department’s lower level and peer management positions. Further, the Facilities Staff Engineer performs higher level and more complex engineering project designs with work order authorizations up to and greater than $250,000.
Responsibilities
Recommend procedures for adherence to safe design alternatives to ensure compliance of applicable laws, codes, regulations and industry standards for projects including engineering aspects such as mechanical, electrical, structural, etc.
Recommend project designs and performances to provide operable facilities and systems through the implementation of improved technology, materials and equipment used in the construction and remodeling of facilities and plants.
Recommend procedures for adherence to cost estimates and budgets for capital engineering projects developed from research, bids, prior projects and contracts and budgets.
Research and assemble detailed procedural customer instruction manuals outlining directives and equipment regarding the start-up and testing of new facilities.
Coordinate and implement engineering design concepts, prepare cost estimates, ascertain scheduling, specify equipment and materials, methods of implementation and prepare design drawings and specifications related to departmental operational needs.
Oversee project expenditures and project status as directed to facilitate construction activities relative to budget constraints, project schedules, equipment and materials expediting and tracking.
Analyze historical engineering project design concepts, budgets, proposals and technical solutions to assist in the development of future departmental budgets.
Facilitate resolution of engineering problems related to existing company-owned, leased, gas control and gas processing facilities; determine problem origins and progressions; prepare resolution recommendation reports including methods, estimate cost and time frames.
Perform calculations required to select materials, equipment, size structures, facilities and systems; prepare and provide supporting information including price lists, quote and prior contracts for estimates and project design costs for work order authorizations.
Participate on project design teams consisting of customers, internal departments, contractors, etc. to implement project design concepts and ensure engineering standards follow all applicable, laws, regulations, codes and industry standards.
Interact with the construction section to ensure contract requirement comply regarding project time frames, budgetary constraints, equipment and materials selection, constructed in accordance with drawings and applicable regulations, etc.
Perform other special projects and assignments as directed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other related field of study.
Engineer I
Completed internship or co-operative experience with knowledge of general engineering principles
Engineer II & III
6 months to 1 year’s continuous experience preferably within the utility industry
Knowledge of safety and hazardous situations associated with the construction and maintenance of facilities that utilize or house flammable gases and liquids.
Knowledge of city, state and federal regulations/codes, Industry Standards and Best Practices, as they relate to facilities and the natural gas industry.
Must have knowledge of general office practices as they relate to budgeting, project planning and training.
Must have interpersonal/communications skills with the ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization
Must have project management skills with the ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology, work under pressure while handling multiple assignments to meet business needs.
Must have problem-solving skills with the ability to apply learned principles to practical work environment situations
Must have computer skills with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
Must be flexible with the ability to work out-of-hours as needed.
