About the Job
GENERAL DESCRIPTION STATEMENT: Set-up, maintain and operate large forge presses (1,000 ton to 12,000 ton and over) to hot forge a variety of production and experimental commodities using a robotic-assist devise for material handling.
- Assistance may be given other operators on proper operational procedures.
- Perform housekeeping and other job-related duties as assigned by Foreman.
- Because of the reach and dexterity of the Man-Mate boom, the operator is located away from the hot and dirty environment in the production operation. He operates the furnace, forge press and trim press equipment remotely and the Man-Mate boom reaches into the press instead of the man, thus improving the general safety and overall surroundings of the work situation.
- Follow and maintain all safety procedures to insure the safest possible work environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Set-up equipment by procedure and assemble multiple interchangeable die components. Floor assemble die set. Transport die sets with aid of overhead hoist and/or powered industrial truck. Add filler plates, position die set in bed of machine and secure with hold-down clamps and locking bolts. Jog press through cycle to check clearances. Insert die wedges and secure with ramming bar and key knocker.
- Pre-heat dies with attached gas-fired and/or electric heat units. Connect all electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic lines as required.
- Continuously monitor pressure and temperature gages for ram bearings, oil pressure, die temperature and other instruments attached to press.
- Perform operating sequence of loading furnace, removing part from furnace and quickly transferring it to the die, actuating ram, removing forged part from die, place part in trim press, activate trim, place part in rack or basket. All operational sequences are controlled from the Man-Mate station.
- Operator performs manual operations such as die-lube, moving of baskets/containers, line up slugs, etc.
- Inspect trial piece visually for quality aspects such as finish, cracks, flaws, laps, flash, etc. Inspect dimensionally for height, width form, diameters, wall thickness, shape(s), contours, and relationships of surfaces with scale, micrometers, templates, guillotine, location gages, and other measuring devices as required.
- Make in-process adjustments such as brush or spray die components prior to each cycle, swab press guide columns, move, shim, realign, change, polish die component(s) or set as required, based on inspection findings of a visual and dimensional nature.
- Use hand tools, such as allen and crescent wrenches, hammers, sledge, air gun, “Tee” wrenches, abrasive cloth, pry bars, tongs, shovel, and ramming bar, and Erie key driver.
- Periodically transport production materials (i.e. WIP, parts, tools equipment, salvage material, scrap, and waste) to the next operation or designated location throughout the facility utilizing a powered industrial truck, powered industrial walk-behind, or pallet jack.
- Report any equipment malfunctions to Supervisor.
