Position Overview
The Computer Science Engineering Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Scientific Instrument Technician to join our team. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: Performing maintenance and construction of complex electronic and digital equipment for use in laboratory instruction or projects. More specifically, the equipment to be maintained includes computer systems, embedded controllers, oscilloscopes, and other measurement instruments, breadboarding, and development systems. Install, repair, and troubleshoot equipment in research laboratories and other departmental facilities. Work performed is subject to inspection and approved by departmental personnel for whom the work is performed. Most work is performed independently but receives general supervision from the Department Chair or delegated supervisor. Supervise student workers, teaching assistants, and other technicians when assigned to perform laboratory maintenance and development.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in related field and two years' of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of equipment and instrumentation appropriate to the nature of the lab and/or the discipline, and of supplies including operation, setup, storage, and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of instructional applications related to the laboratory and/or the discipline.
- Ability to make effective presentations of experiments or software, and provide instruction in laboratory techniques, use of equipment, use of software, procedures, and safety rules.
- Ability to supervise work performed by others.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in a related field (Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Information Technology.)
- Must have working knowledge of related tools, equipment, materials, and computer devices, the ability to read and interpret complex material, the ability to make varied mathematical computations involved in designing and constructing apparatus and equipment, the ability to design, troubleshoot, and maintain all equipment, the ability to operate standard tools, and the knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions for work performed.

Job Duties:
- Performs mechanical and electrical layout, construction, modification, testing, adjustment, calibration, and preventive maintenance on simple and complex equipment for use in scientific research or instruction.
- Uses various testing devices to locate and evaluate circuit voltages and resistance.
- Reads schematic diagrams in designing or repairing apparatus and equipment.
- Rebuilds equipment to improve or change its operation.
- Determines work procedures and methods in accordance with standard trade practices and departmental standards.
- Purchases supplies and parts. Responsible for asset inventory.
- Performs safety inspections and observes safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
