The Infrastructure Engineer is a member of the Enterprise Infrastructure Services team within Information Technology Services. This position plays a key role in maintaining, and improving the campus infrastructure and its many future transformative projects and initiatives across campus including the construction of the Middle Campus, Lower Campus, and future Athletics facilities.

This position will serve as part of a collaborative cross-functional team that will help lead efforts in providing reliable and resilient network infrastructure services for use across the entire Colgate community.

This position supports the Colgate mission by providing a reliable and robust network and hardware infrastructure that supports the academic and administrative areas of the university. This position is responsible for installing, configuring and maintaining the physical network, connections and servers used at Colgate University.

Specific Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

On-Call Responsibilities: The Infrastructure Engineer will participate in the after-hours ITS on-call rotation to respond to issues outside of normal business hours.

Demonstrated skills sufficient to manage day to day maintenance of network and systems and knowledgeable of network industry standards. Demonstrated ability to apply the network and system administration field’s concepts, practices, and procedures. Demonstrated knowledge of multiple areas of network and system administration including networking protocols, data center, operating systems, hardware, routing, switching, wired, wireless, and voice technologies. Ability to troubleshoot and evaluate performance issues within assigned service areas.

Demonstrated skills sufficient to manage day to day maintenance of physical servers and virtual servers. Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft and Linux operating systems. Demonstrated ability to install, configure, and backup servers. Demonstrated experience with cloud infrastructure as a service. Ability to troubleshoot and evaluate performance issues with assigned service areas.

Demonstrated ability to successfully lead small projects and participate in large projects by creating project plans, develop requirements, and coordinate across teams. Demonstrated ability to navigate and consistently add value in a matrixed organization. Consistently meets deadlines and is collaborative with the team.

Displays empathy and patience with users of all levels of sophistication. Able to successfully support most users on campus with common issues. Demonstrated ability to diffuse the most challenging situations, remain calm and focused. Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or a related degree preferred, or equivalent additional professional experience in essential duties and responsibilities.

Must have a valid driver’s license in accordance with the University’s MVR policy.

This is a full-time, 12-month position which is normally scheduled Monday through Friday concurrent with the business hours of the Services and Shared Infrastructure office with appropriate adjustments to the normal schedule to accommodate evening, overnight, weekend and holiday work as required for service maintenance and upgrades. This position is required to participate in an on-call rotation to handle or facilitate off-hour critical problems. The position will support working from home arrangements from time-to-time.
