Department Summary:We are Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB), providing innovative resources and practice-oriented tools that help attorneys better serve their clients. From online legal research and MCLE to forms solutions and print books, CEB strives to make high-quality legal information accessible to everyone, from rural solo practices to large law firms.Founded in 1947, CEB is one of California’s oldest and most prestigious legal information and continuing legal education providers. CEB publishes judgments of California case law, practical guidance for attorneys and, CLE all in a variety of practice areas and formats e.g. print, online and, in-person. CEB operates as a nonprofit within the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). We are an arm of UCLA Extension as we provide continuing education needed for licensed lawyers and other legal professionals.Position Summary:We are looking for a mission-oriented Chief Technology Officer (CTO) with a deep understanding of the interplay between technology and data in the context of delivering knowledge-based solutions to a professional audience. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CTO will shape and drive CEB’s solution and information architecture, strategic technology roadmap, and technology enablement of the product roadmap. The CTO will recruit and develop a small team composed of developers and engineers, as well as manage strategic technology and IT vendor relationships. Preferred candidates will have experience in the data, information, and analytics industries, combined with a strong technical background, and leadership capabilities.
The ideal candidate will bring experience in software development for web and content applications. They will understand approaches to applying machine learning methodologies like natural language processing (NLP) and text mining to help analyze and extract information from unstructured text. They will also have experience working with specialized data sets to improve access, use and exchange of data. They must be curious, collaborative, and pragmatic.
The CTO will:
- Build a vision for an updated content and product management infrastructure.
- Work with technology partners to streamline the ingestion and transformation of large volumes of raw, unstructured legal data.
- Consider how to incorporate large language model technologies to increase the productivity of content authors without sacrificing quality.
- Increase agility by creating an internal technology team of front-end and back-end developers that complements and works in concert with CEB’s technology partners.
- Guide product teams to envision how changes in search technology, AI and other developments create opportunities to evolve CEB’s products and further business objectives.
- Serve as a translator and facilitator to convey technology roadmap visions and requirements to internal and external technology teams.
This position qualifies for a hybrid work structure and requires participation in an in person monthly executive leadership team meeting with locations alternating between Northern and Southern California.
Salary & Compensation:*UCLA provides a full pay range.
