Job Details
A New Jersey-based systems integrator seeks an experienced Automation Industrial Design Engineer to support the front-end design of industrial automation and control systems for diverse machinery. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in factory automation, possess strong skills in component selection for optimized designs, and be capable of preparing detailed proposals based on customer specifications, drawings, and project requirements. This role requires strong technical writing skills and involves close collaboration with senior management, vendors, and distributors, as well as on-site surveys of potential projects. Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with management, customers, sales, project engineers, and vendors to assess requirements, provide expertise, and develop solutions for machine upgrades and drive/PLC projects.
Review customer RFPs, drawings, site videos, and schematics to ensure alignment with project specifications.
Estimate resources for labor, materials, and logistics based on the project scope, select appropriate components, and develop pre-engineered BOMs.
Draft comprehensive proposals supported by detailed cost breakdowns.
Attend kick-off meetings to discuss project scope with engineers and participate in bi-weekly reviews on ongoing and upcoming projects.
Travel locally for job site surveys and participate in training with vendors to stay up-to-date on emerging technologies, with occasional trade shows and out-of-state visits.
Willingness to work paid overtime during peak periods.
Establish a significant impact within 6-12 months to support senior leadership in business development.
Required Qualifications:
BSEE, BSME, or Mechatronics degree, or equivalent experience
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, and project specifications
Proficiency with MS Office Suite
Excellent time management and organization to balance multiple projects and meet deadlines
Responsiveness to customer needs and project tasks
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, writing)
Eagerness to enhance public speaking and client communication abilities
Preferred Skills and Experience:
3-10 years in automation or industrial controls
Background in applications engineering for industrial automation or distribution sales is advantageous
Familiarity with manufacturing lines, industrial machinery, and electro-mechanical components
Strong knowledge of Rockwell, Siemens, ABB controls components
Experience with AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks; machine design or controls design experience is a plus
Comfortable engaging with team members across departments
Skilled at creating technical and client-facing presentations
