The position is located in Sells, AZ.
Position Summary:
Under general supervision; installs, services, and repairs new and existing heating, venting, air conditioning or cooling systems in accordance with building and safety codes and regulations.
The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs, services, and repairs new and existing environmental control systems in residences, office buildings, and commercial establishments.
- Inspects existing environmental control units, providing routine maintenance of units, replacing or repairing equipment and/or parts including Freon and or other fluids.
- Mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, and following blueprints or engineering specifications.
- Inspects new heating and AC or cooling systems/units for conformity to building safety codes.
- Performs heating and cooling installations.
- Connects motors, compressors, temperature and humidity controls, and circulating-ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source.
- Installs air and water filters in completed installation.
- Injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems; adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
- Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to ensure efficient operation.
- Tests joints and connections for gas leaks.
- Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and equipment.
- Joins tubing or pipe to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings, or unions, and solders joints using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant.
- Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit.
- Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of the current standards and safety codes for heating and cooling systems.
- Knowledge of current OSHA rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of duct venting, heating and cooling systems.
- Knowledge of CFR coolants and gases.
- Knowledge of electrical systems and their components.
- Skill in installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing heating and cooling systems.
- Skill in operating HVAC equipment and tools.
- Skill in basic math and using measuring instruments.
- Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
- Ability to coordinate assignments/tasks with other departments, programs or construction trade.
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, schematics, diagrams and or sketches.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
- Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
- Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
- Ability to travel.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and three years of practical work experience as a HVAC Technician; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
- Must be certified in EPA Type II, within one year of hire.
- Must be certified as a HVAC Journey Technician, within six months of hire.
- Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
- May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
- If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
- Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
