About the Job
The primary role of the Human Resources Manager is to promote a strong staff-focused and multi-cultural approach across ALE's international workforce and subcontractors operating in the United States, Chile, and Antarctica. You will oversee day-to-day HR operations, provide strategic direction on talent management, and support workforce development initiatives. You will work closely with ALE's leadership team to strategize, develop, and implement effective human resources policies that align with our mission and organizational goals.
We are looking for a candidate with exceptional organizational and communication skills, and a strong understanding of HR practices in diverse, remote, and international environments. Areas of work will include recruitment and staffing, pay scales, employee relations, compliance with labor laws, performance management, training and development, conflict resolution, and organizational development.
Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is the most experienced deep-field commercial tour operator in Antarctica, providing a wide range of guided experiences, air support, logistical back-up and safety cover for governmental research programs, independent expeditions, and tourists. We work in a worldwide market of different cultures, and we fully embrace this diversity. We also have a strong environmental ethic. ALE is a Utah company with a year-round office in Salt Lake City, a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.
ALE has a small group of permanent employees, most of whom are based at our US office. More than an hundred staff are contracted for seasonal work, with a number also contracted for off-season periods. ALE's operational Antarctic season runs from October to February. You will be based at our US office but will be expected to travel to our seasonal Chilean office and Antarctic camps.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage all HR functions within the organization, encompassing staffing, employee and contractor relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, performance management, compliance, and organizational development. Offer strategic guidance to Partners and department leaders on best practices to cultivate a positive organizational culture and ensure the effective execution of HR policies and procedures across all locations.
- Oversee the full staffing lifecycle, including recruitment, screening, selection, hiring, and onboarding for both full-time employees and seasonal contract staff from diverse global locations, ensuring a smooth and efficient process that meets organizational needs and relevant compliance standards.
- Maintain comprehensive records of staff training and certifications, including internal training, medical certifications, and industry-specific or job-related credentials, to ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory standards. Oversee tracking, documentation, and renewal processes for all certifications.
- Serve as the administrator, technical expert and data entry person for HR-related technology, including Applicant Tracking System, Human Resource Information Systems, Learning Management Systems, and the Onboarding System, ensuring optimal functionality, troubleshooting issues, and providing support and training to users.
- Administer and manage employee benefits programs for US-based staff, including health insurance, and other employee benefits. Evaluate and make recommendations for benefits improvements. Oversight benefit programs for Chilean employed and contracted staff.
- Handle end-of-season tasks such as managing employee relations issues, reviewing and analyzing the End of Season Staff Survey, and addressing feedback to improve organizational culture and employee engagement.
- Assist with coordinating and leading pre-season orientations, seasonal staff training, leadership development, and creating training schedules for full-time staff. Additionally, deliver presentations on HR policies, company procedures, and related topics to ensure all employees are well-informed and compliant.
- Provide strategic recommendations and insights to partners and leadership on HR initiatives, compliance, workforce development, and HR technology improvements to align HR strategies with overall business goals.
- Participate in a variety of general office support activities such as greeting guests, answering phones, filing paperwork, organizing forms.
- May travel as needed to Union Glacier, Antarctica; Punta Arenas, Chile; and other locations across the world to support Human Resources initiatives and activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in human resources, general management, industrial-organizational psychology, or a related field, along with four (4) years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. A current SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification is required. Must possess a valid passport and driver's license.
Preferred qualifications include experience with human resource management in the outdoor recreation or tourism industries. Fluency in Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Human Resources Manager will make an annual salary between $109,250 and $120,750.

The Human Resources Manager is an FLSA Exempt position.
Physical Requirements:
This position involves sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
Incumbents in this role typically require standing or sitting for prolonged periods, communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
Field visits to Chile and Antarctica will require the incumbent to pass a medical questionnaire that is reviewed by our Medical Director.
