Job Description:
As a Housing Staff Attorney, you will play a vital role in providing legal representation and assistance to households in St. Lawrence County who are at risk of homelessness or facing financial difficulties. Your work will involve preventing evictions, securing benefits, and facilitating access to essential services for our clients.
Minimum Requirements:
Licensed to practice law in New York State or eligible for admission.
Demonstrated commitment to aiding low-income and disadvantaged individuals.
Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Willingness to travel within our service area; a valid New York driver's license is required.
Proficiency in computer skills and administrative tasks.
Fluency in Spanish or Chinese is advantageous.
Key Responsibilities:
Offer legal assistance to eligible households at risk of homelessness, focusing on eviction prevention and securing necessary benefits.
Collaborate with government and nonprofit agencies to provide comprehensive support services to homeless and at-risk residents.
Advocate for tenants' rights and utilize legal tools to maintain or secure permanent housing for clients.
Safeguard public and subsidized housing tenancies, address utility issues, and secure emergency assistance as needed.
Provide a range of legal services including counseling, representation, and advocacy in various forums.
Contribute expertise to programs such as Emergency Rental Assistance and Right to Counsel, ensuring compliance and maximizing access to services.
Participate in the development and implementation of organizational priorities, including race equity initiatives and professional development plans.
