DESCRIPTION
Decypher is seeking a qualified Histotechnician to support the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA.
Responsibilities
- The technician will work under the direction of the Histology Supervisor and must apply specialized technical and practical knowledge in histopathologic and histochemical procedures for diagnosis and training. Perform a full range of standard and non-standard histologic procedures to be used in diagnosis, direct patient care, screening for diseases, and follow-up patient care.
- Accession surgical pathology specimens:
- Uses the laboratory information system (CoPath Plus) to determine the correct protocol which is dependent on the type of tissue.
- Must be competent in the use of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) MHS Genesis to determine the source of the specimen and the specific testing profiles required for submitted surgical specimens.
- Must be proficient in ordering tests using MHS Genesis for those specimens received from various off-site locations.
- While operating CoPath Plus, have the ability to entail order entry, specimen accessioning, and proof reading of gross descriptions. Obtain relevant patient history for cases grossed.
- Loads, operates, and performs required reagent management on automated tissue processors.
- Embeds tissue into paraffin blocks. Full knowledge and understanding of various tissue types and which require specialized embedding techniques.
- Cuts tissue using an automated or manual rotary microtome, producing 2–5-micron thick paraffin sections of excellent quality. The incumbent will also section control tissue as required by the department.
- Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for mail out.
- Prepare biological waste for proper disposal.
Qualifications:
- Degree: Certificate.
- Education: Graduate from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
- Certification: Certification/registration as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as specified in the TO.
- Experience: Minimum 1 year
