About the Job
Responsibilities:
- Capable of utilizing a Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Properly label Specimens components (jars, cassettes, slides, etc.) in accordance to laboratory procedures.
- Embed formalin fixed tissues in accordance to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) tissue orientation protocols.
- Perform microtomy of formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) in accordance to SOP protocols.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments and document findings.
- Maintain a clean working environment.
- Maintain working inventory required for histological processes.
- Prepare reagents, including stains solutions, graded alcohols and bulk reagents according to proper specifications.
- Knowledgeable of laboratory instrumentation use (microtome, stainers, processors, etc.).
- Perform more complex procedures for processing and staining tissues, including special stains (SS), and other special requests as assigned.
- Verify slide stain quality prior to pathologist distribution.
- Ensure that all stained slides are distributed to pathologists in an efficient and timely manner.
- Perform and document equipment quality control and preventive maintenance.
- Capable of grossing small biopsies, if applicable.
- Perform basic troubleshooting skills.
- Support Histology Management by communication supply needs. Document receipt of supplies and the date reagents are put in use.
- Practice good documentation practice.
- Troubleshoots with supervision.
- Maintain filing systems to include FFPE tissue blocks, prepared slides and related documents.
- Enforce proper chemical hygiene practices to ensure a safe and compliant working environment.
- Perform chemical hazardous waste disposal in accordance to regulatory guidelines.
- Assist in duties as deemed necessary by the Histology Supervisor, Pathology Manager, or Medical Director.
- Comply with quality control policies and SOPs to ensure all aspects of laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories.
- Assist in duties as deemed necessary by the Histology Supervisor, Pathology Lab Manager, or Medical Director.
- Associates or Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university and 3+ plus years of experience, completion of an accredited Histology Program or an equivalent combination of education and 5 years' experience required
- HT(ASCP) certification is required
- HTL (ASCP) certification, preferred
- Must have good computer skills; LIS required, Outlook, Word, Excel are basic requirements
