Job Summary and Qualifications
You Will:
- Perform histology and cytology procedures including specimen processing/fixation, cell block preparation, embedding, microtomy, slide preparation, routine stains, IHC and special stains, case organization in accordance with department procedures.
- Assure positive sample, block and slide identification
- Prepare and maintains reagents for routine stains and histology procedures.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and instrumentation per manufacturer & department procedures and per department schedule.
- Adhere to department policy with regards to performance and documentation of quality control and quality assurance for instrumentation, equipment and procedures performed.
- Utilize independent judgement and problem solving skills to ensure the accuracy of procedures performed and proper equipment performance. Troubleshoots to and takes appropriate corrective action to resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely manner for resolution.
- Adhere to department policy with regards to performance and documentation of quality control and quality assurance for instrumentation, equipment and procedures performed.
You Should Have:
- High School Diploma AND minimum two years of histology experience
- OR High School Diploma AND completion of an accredited program in Histotechnology
- OR Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Biology AND one year of histology experience
- OR Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology or Chemistry
- National Certification as a MT (ASCP) or HT (ASCP) required
- State license where required (CA, FL, GA, HI, LA, MT, NV, NY, ND, RI, WV)
- Thorough knowledge of histology methods and correlation to disease processes
- Ability to follow protocols for the proper fixation and routine staining of samples
- Ability to consistently prepare and produce specimen sections with appropriate slide orientation, thickness, and stain quality for microscopic diagnosis by a pathologist
- Demonstrates good technique in the cutting, embedding, orientation and staining of specimens
- General knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements
- Excellent communication, team work and organizational skills. Sets a positive example.
- Ability to train others
- Effective and proactive problem solving and decision making skills
