Assists the Trauma Medical Director, Trauma Physicians and other staff by accurately identifying, abstracting and coding trauma dates as outlined for custom data abstraction as outlined in Digital Innovations, Collector, NTRACS and American Burn Association software; responsible for the maintenance of the trauma/burn registry and databases which comply with standards set by the American College of Surgeons and respective state health departments; reviews Emergency Department registration and/or admission records daily to identify trauma admissions for entry into the trauma registry software; screens death reports for inpatient and outpatient surgeries and emergency records for trauma case identification; reviews electronic medical records to assess information required for abstraction and reviews records for data collection and quality improvement according to standards outlined by the Trauma Medical Director, Trauma Program Manager, and American College of Surgeons; obtains core information for patients’ medical records, and enters information into approved software; maintains confidentiality and security of patient data stored in the Trauma Registry; codes trauma specific injuries as well as AIS scoring; reports data to Alabama Trauma Registry, Mississippi Trauma Registry and the ACS TQIP program; maintains quality control of case findings, abstracting, coding and data processing procedures; follows established procedures for manual and/or computer retrieval of trauma data; answers requests for data, and prepares special and routine reports as assigned; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; assists with orientation and training of registry staff; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience in Health Information Management.
RHIT or RHIA is preferred and will substitute for the required experience.
