Job Details
We are seeking an experienced Highway and Traffic Engineer to join our growing team, where collaboration and work-life balance are at the core of our culture. This role combines the exciting challenges of highway design with traffic engineering, offering the opportunity to work on diverse and impactful transportation projects throughout the Capital Region, Lower Hudson Valley, and beyond.
This position will allow you to work alongside multidisciplinary teams of highway and traffic engineers, transportation planners, and construction inspection staff, contributing to projects that improve infrastructure and positively impact communities.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop roadway, trail, and sidewalk designs as part of larger transportation infrastructure projects.
Lead or assist in traffic impact and safety studies, evaluating existing and proposed transportation improvements.
Perform intersection design and layout, including roundabouts and traffic signal systems.
Prepare construction contract documents, project reports, and cost estimates.
Manage day-to-day project activities, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and client communication for both basic and intermediate projects.
Provide supervision and delegation of tasks to junior engineers and technicians.
Apply traffic engineering principles and modeling tools such as Synchro and Vissim to perform detailed traffic analyses.
Oversee quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) processes to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
Lead project and public meetings, acting as the client representative for assigned projects.
Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the successful delivery of projects.
Essential Job Functions:
Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work for transportation projects.
Apply judgment and independent evaluation to execute tasks while following standard practices and procedures.
Analyze transportation designs using appropriate software applications and recommend improvements.
Anticipate project goals and complete engineering assignments of intermediate complexity.
Serve as the Project Engineer for basic projects, handling staffing, scope, schedule, and budget management.
Provide mentoring and guidance to junior staff members, while handling client relations for routine projects.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program or an approved equivalent.
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.
6+ years of experience in a similar highway and/or traffic engineering role.
Proficiency in engineering design software such as MicroStation, Inroads, AutoCAD, Synchro, and Vissim.
Working knowledge of transportation planning guidelines and manuals (e.g., NYSDOT Highway Design Manual, MUTCD, NACTO).
Active involvement in professional engineering organizations is a plus.
Technical Skills:
Design, develop, and prepare complete plans and specifications for highway and traffic engineering projects.
Perform traffic engineering analyses and interpret test data.
Ensure project deliverables meet client requirements and are completed on time and within budget.
Review and check design calculations prepared by other team members for accuracy.
