The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) performs a variety of clerical functions in the clinical setting.
The HUC interacts with both internal and external Customers and utilizes the Hospital Information
System to accurately perform order entry, transcribe physician orders, and retrieve patient data. The HUC maintains and processes all medical record information. work is prioritized with the input of the RNs. All work is conducted in a manner that supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.
- Follow attendance standards and expectations.
- Complete all hospital wide mandatory educational programs.
- Complete all orientation requirements and departmental competency testing requirements.
- Adhere to hospital policies and procedures as well as department specific policies and procedures.
- Adapt to floating to similar units when required and adapts to changing patient assignments as volume and acuity fluctuate.
- Utilize computer skills to access information for patient related data, order entry, and hospital systems.
- Demonstrate effective verbal, written, and telephone communication skills with patients, families/significant others, physicians, and coworkers. Communicates using phone and paging systems. Updates cellular phone information in the computer daily.
- Manage physical resources (supplies and equipment) appropriately, assuring that adequate supplies and equipment are available and in good working order. Stocks nurse's station with all forms and records needed. Files necessary information and faxes orders to pharmacy.
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy while communicating patient information and managing medical records.
- Access and retrieves results from various tests and imaging procedures and promptly communicates critical results to the RN.
- Transcribe order promptly and accurately. Enters patient data into the computer, on Kardex and MAR. Consults with MD or RN to clarify orders and communicates when an order cannot be carried out. Assembles medical record for new admissions and dis-assembles chart for discharged patients using medical record criteria and forwards the chart to the department.
- Participate in patient placement by:
- Assuring that discharges are communicated quickly to the central HUC station
- Assuring that open beds are identified and made ready by housekeeping in a timely manner
- Updating the nursing supervisor, admitting and the nursing director on patient flow issues
- Communicating new admissions and discharges to the staff in a timely manner.
- Maintain control boards and unit specific logs including restraint lists, call-in information, and lab results. Post patient care team assignments.
- Demonstrate knowledge regarding patient rights, advanced directives, occurrence reporting, and disaster preparedness.
- Transport blood and blood products.
- Enter staff payroll entries in the Kronos system as directed.
- Participate in problem solving activities to address process issues, personnel issues and per-formance issues. Communicates concerns to the appropriate person in a professional manner and tone, and works proactively to avoid problems.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- High School Graduate
- Compliant with PPD requirements.
- Experience:
- One year hospital or clinic related setting experience preferred
- Medical terminology desirable.
