UC Health is hiring a part-time 24 hours/week Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) for the 2nd shift (3:00pm-11:00pm) to support the Emergency Room at UC Medical Center.

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) facilitates the efficient functioning of a patient care unit by performing receptionist and clerical/non-clinical support activities. The Health Unit Coordinator has knowledge of age-specific needs of the patient population.
Responsibilities
Teamwork/Collaboration:
Working effectively with the team/work group to accomplish daily team/unit tasks: working proactively to achieve the team/unit goals and facilitate group cohesiveness.
Communication/Coordination:
Supports the patient care environment by communicating clearly, courteously and effectively, verbal and through written and computer documentation, while maintaining confidentiality of information. Provides prompt, courteous communication to patients, visitors and personnel. Keeps the Admitting office informed of patient activity on the unit through the Hospital information system. Communicates with the Environmental and Nutritional Services to ensure appropriate activities occur. Utilizes computer access appropriately for lab, diagnostics, etc. Contact IS&T Help Desk when computer workstations on other devices require repair or malfunction. Answers the intercom and telephone with UCMC standard timeframes and courteously transmits information to the appropriate recipient. Utilizes in an appropriate and timely manner, the correct paging or intercom system to notify other health care members as requested. Pages the resuscitation team during cardiac arrests and remains available at the nurse station for further instructions. Facilitates interdepartmental communication by providing information (e.g. phone messages) to appropriate clinicians.
Clerical:
Support-provides clerical/non-clinical support for the provision with patient services under the supervision of the nursing management. Assembles the patient chart with appropriate forms according to policy, providing additional forms as necessary. Prepares charts for patients scheduled for the operating room, special studies/therapies, transfer or discharge. Prepares maintains and files forms and reports in patient charts. Collaborates with all disciplines for STAT priorities, including medications, IVs, labs, scheduling of tests, et cetera. Dispositions patients through appropriate computer systems to promptly process admissions, discharges, deaths and transfers. (i.e. prepares lab labels, daily charge documents, register, disposition and process charges, maintain unit log [OB]. Facilitates scheduled studies and therapies by scheduling and coordinating in-house transportation for patients. Assists in coordination of discharge process. Should process discharges appropriately, assuring that all of the patient's records is sent to the Medical Records department. Maintains presence at clerical stations arranges coverage for short absences or notifies charge nurse of absence. Performs audit of and follow-up on missing medical record documents (consent, advance directives, etc.) Assists with retrieving information for clinicians via EPIC and other clinical information systems. Adheres to dress code. Completes annual competencies as required by the organization.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. HUC education from college or vocational school preferred.
Years of Experience: 1-2 years equivalent customer service experience.

Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Takes initiative on tasks with minimal supervision; self-starter.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communications skills both written and verbal required.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with Microsoft Software packages, including Word, Excel, Outlook and database management.
- Demonstrated time management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a demanding environment are essential.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- Completes yearly mandatory unit specific, hospital and safety education
- BLS (if not certified at hire, can receive training during orientation)
