Health Support Specialist
Your Specific Responsibilities:
Performs client registration for the WIC Program.
Interviews clients to obtain demographic and eligibility data.
Reviews documentation and determines eligibility for program benefits as specified in the DHM Manual 150-24.
Enters data into FL WISE as specified in the Clinic Manual and Help Sheets.
Notifies clients of expiring certification and schedules appointments.
Explains WIC Program eligibility, application procedures, correct benefits usage, and maintains confidentiality of client information.
Issues benefits in FL WISE, distributes VOC cards and dispenses in-stock special formula using FL WISE computer system.
Floats to all sites in Pinellas County WIC Program to provide coverage of Senior Clerk position as needed.
Performs hemoglobin blood tests, heights, and weights for WIC clients before they see the WIC Nutritionist. Hemoglobin blood tests are performed using a finger stick to obtain the blood samples for use with a HemoCue. Heights and weights are performed on approved equipment and using correct techniques.
Universal precautions are used in performing the finger stick.
Bio-medical waste will be properly disposed in the approved containers. The work area is organized at the beginning of each day with the equipment and supplies as needed to perform the above duties.
The height and weight values are recorded on the prenatal weight gain grid or the growth charts and values are plotted on the graph as needed. The height, weight and hemoglobin values are recorded in the client record.
Maintains knowledge of and implements all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the WIC Program and providing accurate information to program participants
Participates in division QA by running and working Blood Report monthly for Pinellas County WIC program to assess compliance with state and federal regulations as in DHM Manual 150-24.
Places alerts in FL WISE client files as needed to increase compliance percentage.
Provides basic nutrition and breastfeeding information to clients through the newsletter contacts.
Participates in breastfeeding promotion and support activities.
Participates in community outreach activities as required.
Submits reports (EARs, EARs summary reports, timesheets, trip logs, etc.) to the supervisor or WIC administrative office in accordance with agency and division guidelines.
Performs other related clerical duties as needed.
Performs other related educational training requirements to meet minimum WIC program standard.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to perform simple medical procedures
Knowledge of normal and abnormal health conditions
Knowledge and skill in data collection and organization of records and data
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to perform clerical procedures
Skilled in in the use of personal computers and software programs including data entry
Ability to work independently
Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
Ability to prepare reports and correspondence
Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Qualifications:
Minimum –
High school education or equivalent
Ability to work a flexible schedule to include some evenings and weekends.
Ability to travel to other locations with or without prior notice
Preferred -
WIC experience, or experience working with women and children in a clinical setting performing height weight and hemoglobin measurements.
Bilingual in Spanish and English.
A valid driver's license.
