Health and Safety Manager
Location: Montgomery, AL
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Salary: $110,000-$120,000 per year
Shift: Monday-Friday with occasional Saturdays
Job Summary:
The Health and Safety Manager will enhance and support the safety and environmental processes by strengthening the safety program, conducting worksite evaluations, controlling hazards, managing environmental exposure, and training employees.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver new hire orientation on workers' compensation and health and safety issues.
- Coordinate medical care for injured employees and follow up to ensure proper treatment.
- Arrange doctor visits to the facility to understand workforce and workflow.
- Submit initial FAST FAX claim information within 48 hours of an incident.
- Conduct or assist with accident investigations to determine root causes.
- Obtain and document doctor's assessments and return-to-work instructions.
- Ensure medical restrictions are appropriate and specific to the injury.
- Communicate with workers' compensation representatives, nurse case managers, and attorneys to manage cases.
- Adhere to work duty processes, explaining restrictions and procedures to team leaders and employees.
- Track and manage employees in appropriate work programs.
- Lead ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
- Maintain records, schedules, and prepare for annual audits.
- Attend workers' compensation hearings as required.
- Investigate all accidents promptly and identify root causes with corrective actions.
- Maintain OSHA logs and supplemental injury/illness reports.
- Facilitate meetings to review OSHA log accuracy and obtain certification signatures.
- Provide statistical analysis of injuries to the safety committee and plant manager, developing action plans to reduce injuries.
- Ensure in-plant first aid procedures are in place and communicated to the workers' comp liaison.
- Coordinate CPR, first aid, and bloodborne pathogens training, maintaining training records.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA health standards and maintain necessary first aid supplies.
- Stay current with OSHA standards and implement written programs to ensure compliance.
- Implement human element recommendations from the fire insurance company.
- Develop and implement an emergency response plan.
- Establish and manage a safety committee, ensuring action items are tracked to completion.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Project).
- Understanding of organizational rules, regulations, procedures, and practices.
- Knowledge of environmental control regulations and compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with regulatory activities such as EEO, AAP, OSHA/Safety, Workers' Compensation, Unemployment, FMLA, and FLSA.
- First Aid and CPR knowledge.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to take a stand when necessary.
- Problem-solving skills, including asking appropriate questions and gathering information.
- Ability to communicate at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders.
Special Requirements:
- Professional qualifications in Safety Engineering and Ergonomics.
- Willingness to work overtime, including before or after normal hours and on weekends.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Three years of practical experience and knowledge of engineering methods (preferably automotive).
- Knowledge of OSHA standards and reporting requirements.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 (auditor certification preferred).
- Training in accident investigation, first responder/first aid, AED, and bloodborne pathogen training (preferred).
- Familiarity with state and national environmental programs and requirements.
