What Do We Do?
Business Unit: Health & Safety
The H&S Team manages safety for the Reading Mill. We provide guidance through personal interactions, written policies, and educational materials.
Ongoing Projects
Ongoing projects for my team (not necessarily an intern)
- machine guarding assessments for compliance with ANSI B11.19
- monthly audits against our written policies
- reviewing our written policies and procedures
- industrial hygiene work
- working with engineering and contractors to provide safe work practices for their work
- working with employees to better understand their tasks and provide management with direction to improve the safety of tasks conducted on the floor
- injury and near-miss investigation
Your Role as an Intern
You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:
Some specifics include:
- radiation survey
- hex chrome sampling
- noise sampling
- Fall protection survey
- List of task done under interlock
- PPE posters for each department
Our Value Proposition
This position will allow you to develop and build expertise in the following core skills:
You must be:
Hourly rates are based on: 1 - Program of study; 2 - Degree type (i.e., Bachelor's); 3 - Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00 per hour.
Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)
Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.

You must be:
- Currently enrolled in a masters degree program majoring in Safety Sciences, Health and Safety or related field
- Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics: Coach and educator, problem solver, organized, ready to spend plenty of time on the operations floor
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Willing and able to work on-site at our Reading, PA location.
- Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter's government contracts.
