About the Job
The AANEM is seeking a Health Policy Coordinator/Sr Coordinator who can help us improve the lives of patients with neuromuscular diseases such as ALS and muscular dystrophy. This position will play an integral role in supporting strategies to positively and appropriately influence coverage, reimbursement, legislative and regulatory policies, and practices related to neuromuscular diseases.
Minimal qualification is a bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years’ work experience in health policy, government affairs, medical coding and billing, or related field. Position offered as coordinator or senior coordinator commensurate with level of education and/or experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Research, monitor, analyze and make recommendations on developments in health policy related to quality of care, clinical data registries, and reimbursement issues. Provide analysis on matters pertaining to the Medicare physician fee schedule, Quality Payment Program, alternative payment models, and value-based care. Collaborates with Health Policy Manager to develop an issues database for relevant matters that affect members and the patients they treat.
- With oversight from Health Policy Manager, responsible for the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and RUC issues that relate to AANEM members. Introduce new CPT codes and help identify the appropriate Relative Value. Attends at least one CPT meeting per year and RUC meetings as necessary. Prepares necessary paperwork to assist the AANEM physician advisors to these panels. Must understand and discuss the association’s position on these issues and assist the physicians to answer questions asked by the CPT/RUC panels or other physicians. Informs Health Policy Manager of issues as they arise and submits a written report to the Health Policy & Standards Director after each meeting.
- Monitors and assesses outside organizations’ payment, coding, and coverage policies, and prepares briefs to share the information with director and other staff as appropriate.
- Answers coding, billing, and policy questions by using internal and external resources, such as the AANEM’s evidenced based guidelines, position statements, and technology literature reviews.
- Contributes department news and coding to AANEM communication vehicles, including drafting coding questions based on queries from members and incorporating appropriate relevant industry information.
- Prepares first draft of the next year’s coding guide by December 31, using the previous year’s guide as a template and incorporating member questions. Works with IT to implement the guide as an electronic, web-based product.
- Serves as co-staff liaison to the Practice Issues Review Panel (a committee made up of physicians) along with Health Policy & Standards Director, working with it to develop evidence-based guidelines. Ensures that all AANEM best practice standards contain consistent messaging and are incorporated into the accreditation and certification programs. Submits papers to Muscle & Nerve.
- Attends the entire AANEM fall annual meeting and portions of the spring and winter meetings as needed.
