HEAD OF INFORMATION SERVICES

Reports to: Assistant Director of Public Services
Managerial Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage Library and building operations in the absence of the Director; respond to emergencies and provide support, as needed; act quickly, exercising good judgment.
- Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the Library and its departments; provide day-to-day management of the Library and departments including interacting with the public, supervising, evaluating, training, hiring, scheduling, emergency preparedness, budgeting and recommending department and Library needs.
- Work as a member of the Management Team to create, interpret, update and communicate policies and procedures, compatible with the Library's Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Plan; participate in the development of short and long-term goals for the department and the Library.
- Serve as a face for the Library; engage in outreach and events in the Novi community; participate in and manage staff on various Library, professional and community projects as assigned.
- Ensure building safety, accessibility and security at opening and closing; write detailed, clear and concise incident reports.
- Supervise: full, part-time and substitute staff including Librarians, Programming Coordinator, Youth & Teen Services Supervisor, Youth & Teen Programming Assistant, Customer Service Assistant and Technology Assistant.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Create and manage the budget for the department, including collections, training, equipment and programming.
- Manage and participate in collection development duties: budgeting, selection, ordering, turnaround time, marketing and weeding for the library's print, digital, and Lakeshore kiosk collections.
- Work directly with the Director and Assistant Director of Public Services to investigate and respond to material challenges, utilizing the Library's Collection Development Policy and Reconsideration Form as guides, to inform the Library Board of Trustees, staff, and community as needed.
- Explore and make recommendations for new and improved collections based on trends and community needs; plan for future collections.
- Manage and provide reference services, readers' advisory and computer assistance using a variety of collections, materials and formats. Recognize the essential role of reference services in public librarianship and prioritize staffing of the Information Desks.
- Oversee the staff liaison to the Novi Historical Commission; attend meetings as needed, assist with programs and displays; oversee the maintenance of the Local History collection in both print and digital.
- Manage programming and outreach opportunities for youth, teens and adults appropriate to the needs of the community; oversee the Teen Space afterschool program. Collaborate with iCube Makerspace Committee to ensure adequate staffing, patron services, policies and procedures, budgeting and equipment for public technological programming.
- In cooperation with the Information Technology department, investigate emerging technologies, processes, and new uses for technology for staff and the public. Oversee staff technology training opportunities to ensure all staff have the tools and knowledge to assist library users.
- Participate in library committees including: Programming, Customer Service and iCube.
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
- Stay informed of library news/events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, social media, library and staff e-newsletters; contribute content as appropriate.
- Analyze data to make informed decisions.
- Meet with vendors to choose providers for library services and materials.
- Communicate effectively with patrons, co-workers and professional colleagues.
- Work positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish departmental and Library goals.
- Foster and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and the community.
- Adapt and respond to multiple priorities, interruptions and demands; resolve problems in a positive manner.
- Seek professional continuing education, both organized and casual, with a commitment to keeping technology and building related needs and services current and appropriate for patrons and staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications & Skills:
- MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited school required.
- Three (3) or more years of related public library experience including two (2) years of public library supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of adult, teen and youth literature.
- Proficient in MS Office, Google Workspace, Internet browsers and databases and other computer related technologies.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Dedication to public service and providing excellent customer service.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to organize work, set priorities and manage projects to completion.
- Enthusiastic, positive, friendly, self-motivated, creative and approachable.
- Strong obligation to confidentiality.
- Ability to speak multiple languages helpful.
- May require a valid Michigan driver's license based on assignment.
Working Environment:
- May be required to: sit, stand, bend, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel and/or walk for extended periods of time; carry books, boxes of books or objects weighing up to 50 pounds; push or pull wheeled carts with a total weight of up to 500 pounds; operate assigned equipment; pick up litter; spread ice melt; use the telephone, keyboard, computer mouse.
- Evening, weekend and some holiday hours are required.

Salary: $57,470 - $83,616 depending on qualifications and experience
Benefits: This position offers medical, dental and life insurance, as well as a retirement plan and time benefits. The retirement plan is a Defined Contribution plan, with employees contributing 3% and the City of Novi contributing 9%. Time benefits are earned beginning on the date of hire and include personal business time (6 days annually), sick time (1 day per month), vacation time (7 hours per month to start, increasing based on years of service) and paid Holidays.
Hours: Forty (40) hours per week, including days/evenings and some weekends.
